This was basically Sonnen's fight to lose, despite Filho being the favorite going in... Many even argued he was the world's number 1 at the time over Silva. Filho has good takedowns for a BJJ guy, but not compared to Sonnen who is not only a D1 wrestler but really translated his style to suit MMA.

He fought two opponents at once. Sonnen and a ghost. Give the man some respect.

Sonnen was never the absolute best but at one point he could beat any mw on the planet. Silva got lucky aswell and though it is hardly ever talked about in their second fight he would have been dq in any serious sport. Silva cheated worse then conor did against khabib.

Catching someone in a submission hold is lucky? I guess all the time Silva spent training BJJ was wasted. Damn shame. Imagine the countless hours spent on mats in the last decade or so before that night… Out of the blue, his legs just fell in the right place in the right time. The set up, the adjustments… All pure luck.

I think you might’ve been unlucky with that post since it was so stupid. Care to try again? Maybe you’ll get lucky and post a brilliant one

lol what the hell are you talking about? people do things like poke eyes and grab the fence. A shorts grab for one takedown is hardly grounds for disqualification. What "serious" sport are you talking about?

silva knocked sonnen out by the second round, hardly any luck involved. Clearly another class of fighter, and he did it while he was old.

Anderson Silva submitted Chael Sonnen coming off of a surgery, and then knocked him out in two rounds. But you somehow think that Chael Sonnen could beat anyone.

Maybe i need to rewatch it, as far as I remember he held sonnens shorts for about 40 seconds. Remember the greasing between rounds? Sonnen would have lost the belt in the first fight either way because of the steroids but that was a Lucky catch man, im glad it happened but it was Lucky.

Serious as any sport that actually penalises rule infractions. For exemple anthony smith keeping on fighting against jj after geting his faced bashed in with an illegal move. Jj was wrecking him but still?

Yes, chael sonnen at one point had a good chanse at beating any mw in the world. He could lose aswell ofc.

Maybe im wrong, as I said, ill rewa.tch the fight and get back to you if i change my opinion.

Hahaha, that's not what i meant man and I think you know it. But he didnt let sonnen punch him 200 times in the head for the fun of it. Going into the fifth round sonnen was a massive favorite to win.

Yeah I miss WEC too. All the little guys had more excitement and with the LHW division, I enjoyed it equally as UFC.

How was this Sonnen's fight to lose? That wasn't the case at all, and as you mentioned, Filho was the favorite (-400, in fact, meaning a sizable favorite) and in the conversation for best MW in MMA with Anderson and Hendo.

People expected Filho to dominate Sonnen, and the wrestler who'd been submitted numerous times by triangles and armbars while in top position, to get tapped by arguably the best submission grappler in the division at the time. And that's what happened. Sonnen wasn't even held to the standing of a guy like Misaki at that time (a very good MW), who Filho submitted a year prior.
