This Silva/Okami fight is not remembered but was the main event of the UFC Rio. UFC was exploding in Brazil, the pressure was enourmous. It was not just a fight with Okami.

What was it then? Silva was a GIANT favorite, he was supposed to run through Okami, they had no bad blood iirc and there was no issues on a higher level like country conflicts etc. I can appreciate it no doubt but it doesn't seem much different than a lot of other big fights for their times. No disrespect, I just don't really get it I guess. I mean, you have Spider in your name and it was probably a huge fight for you and I can respect that, it's just this wasn't really a big fight. I could see this thread on Silva Sonnen II though with Sonnen talking so much shit about Brazil, beating up Silva for almost the entirety of the 1st fight etc.

Now this is the type of stuff I think of when someone says it wasn't just a fight.

The 1980 winter olympics when USA beat the Soviet Union wasn't just a hockey game is another example.

That was the most predetermined outcome I ever remember of a (Male) UFC title fight.

Okami had no path to victory in that fight and everyone knew it. Silva was like -1800.

It is up there, but I doubt anything will top Mendes vs. Mckenzie hahaha

Thread massively derailed by the first response...

Title fight.

But yeah, no one thought McKenzie would beat Mendes, why the fuck was that fight even sanctioned?

Sorry didnt notice title in the sentence. I felt bad for Cody when I saw that was made, not sure why he agreed tbh. Even he had to know he didnt have a chance.

I am actually trying to think of a bigger squash match title fights and am coming up blank.

Maybe Jones vs. Chael, but I think they're about equal.

There are plenty of more squash match tittle fights in history, specially in lightest and female divisions. Or just Silva vs some of the lesser tittle challengers than Okami that he had.

Its true that it was a very favourable stylistic matchup for Silva and defending his belt at home for the first time. So he was a massive favourite, but not so much because of his opponent not being quality

It wasnt just a fight imo, it had the promotion on the line. (although not the only fight that had the promotion on the line)

Great card. I didn't care too much for Silva at that time and remember kinda hoping Okami won. Looking back and seeing how the fight went, I can't imagine how Okami could have possibly won.

LOL I was super drunk when I made this thread.

Let me explain what I tried to say: this is not an Anderson Silva acclamation thread, I just used one of his fights of an example because Im a huge fan so it is easy for me to remember. But the point is that for me the level of pressure matter when we talk about the importance of a fight. Like I said, MMA was HUGE at Brazil at that time like never before or after and Anderson was the posterboy in the main event. Thats not the same as fighting Okami on Rumble Of The Rock 8, and sometimes I think we get too much objective when talking about resumes just taking the names into account while ignoring all the context behind fights.
