Hey guys, did a quick search and saw a thread on some mat burn but they're weren't that many replies and I'm looking for advice more specific to the facial area.

I'm especially concerned because I've had some bad ass acne in the past which has left some scarring near the cheekbone area, and I have sensitive skin on top of that. I really, really, really don't want this shit to scar over, and though I don't think it's likely, I'm still paranoid after one of my boys told me about his mat burn scarring over on his forehead lol.

Sometimes in the past when I would be stubborn and not tap to chokes, the blood vessels near my face would become darkish red for a couple days but eventually go away, and I'm hoping it will be the same for this. This time it looks kind of the same, but I definitely got some mild to mediocre mat burn on my orbital bone/around my eye while my entire right cheek is dark reddish. What do you guys think?

Also, going on a quick rant, I got my mat burn on my face rolling with a relatively newbie wrestler turned BJJer. Started on the knees, tried to pull guard, he wasn't having any of it, so instead I try to drive low and get double unders, this asshole hops to his feet and grabs a front headlock and sprawls out while pushing me into the mat squeezing/driving as hard as he can. Eh, whatever, es normal. I wait for him to make a move, he literally does nothing but drive me into the mat for 4 min (we do 6 min rounds). When I finally get him to make a move the last min by laying flat/completely still, we end up in side and this guy now tries to tap me out with a headlock. I get out, move to half, he moves into your standard wrestlers half guard as he gable grips my head and arm driving his face into my head and squeezes his arms trying to get the tap again.

It's like dude really? This ain't no comp man lol. Maybe my ego got in the way a little and I should've tapped to prevent the mat burns, but still. It wasn't like they were chokes. Of course he also quit after that as he was too tired to do more rounds. Anyways, /rant, I'm gonna be youtubing some vids tonight to prevent that next time.

Clean the wound with water and a little bit of gentle soap. Blot it dry with a cotton terry towel, then apply Neosporin to the entire wound. Cover it up a bandaid or gauze with medical tape. Change the dressing and reapply Neosporin ~ 2x/day until it's healed and sealed. DO NOT pick at it no matter what, and try not to let it dry out and scab up (impedes the granulation tissue).

is normal.

man the fuck up.

Lol dick. On a physical/pain level i'm not concerned. I've got plenty of mat burns on my knees/feet, but I could care less about those.

My face however, for reasons stated in the OP, is different lol. I don't like going out in public/work with half my face blotched up looking gross. Especially when I plan on being around females.

Thank you very much Harukaze.

Do you think there is a chance it will scar over, or if I take good care of it should I be alright?

Sorry dude, as you probably noticed no one has any good solutions for healing mat burn quickly.

For something so common it amazing how little people know about it.

I hate dudes like that. I try not to let them sit out the next round. Tell him no, you have to go one more round.

I had something similar recently and I don't know what it is.

I have small warts under my chin and I'm pretty sure its from someone trying to force a choke that's being defended (basically someone was rubbing there gi/arm under my chin trying to get the joke and a few days later I ended up with small warts under my chin).

I thought wounds heal quicker when left uncovered?

Ya I heard warts are contagious

Lol yeah your thread was the one I was referring to in the OP. =/

Hopefully we'll get more insight. On top of Harakuze's post, from what I've found online so far, consistent moisturizer, aloe vera (too bad I don't got any), neosporin and ice seem to help. As I said before though, what I'm definitely most concerned about is the scarring. =/

Yeah man, It's very frustrating. I call them the two round quitters. They just blow their gas tank in 2 rounds tops going hard as fuck and leave right after. Also like I said, they roll as if it's the World Mundials lol. It's very frustrating considering the rest of the regular guys are averaging 4-5 rounds at least and they pull that shit. Anyways, enough bitching for me tonight about that at least lol.

Damn bro that sucks. Mofo probably had a dirty ass Gi and/or warts of his own that he transmitted.

Definitely be careful with the warts. As a poster said above, they are contagious. I've had a wart on my arm, touched it, got another wart that popped out a couple inches near it. I looked it up online, easiest way for me to get rid of it was to burn it off with a match, similar to how you kill a tick. Blistered up for a couple days though, and I'm not sure if I would do the same on my chin lol. Will also leave a scar if you do it that way. You can go to a CVS or the like and by some wart remover stuff that like freezes it off. Hope that helps.

My face burn healed quite nicely on it's own. It was fairly substantial, but now I can't even remember which side of the face it was on.

YOu can try adding aloe vera in addition to the above (neosporin) or by itself. Aloe gel heals very well but it stings a little at first (nothing you can't handle). Rub it on very gently (no need to be rough)

Get lots of sleep, too. It matters

It should be OK unless you're prone to scarring. Also, be sure to change your bandaid if it gets wet (like if you wash your face midday or you get really sweaty while it's on).

It's an outdated notion that was more or less dispelled in the medical community in the '70s. The prior thought was that scabs were "nature's bandage" (which, in terms of sealing the wound from the outside environment, they are), but it was later found that scabs impeded the growth of granulation tissue, and, if malformed, led to adhesions in the wound that could adversely affect tissue regrowth patterns. Furthermore, there was at one point confusion of granulation tissue for macerated tissue; while maceration is still a legitimate concern, regular changing of dressings and immediate changing of a wet dressing (not from exudate but from an external source of liquid) are excellent methods to prevent maceration.

I get these types of things all the time. The worst I ever had was gi burn all over my cheek from a training parter who was super aggressive with a shoulder on face smashing pass. It was horrendous. Generally my burns go through a few phases:

- Fresh burn where it hurts when you apply soap and water.
- Crust over.
- Peeling

The process is going to take a week or two and there isn't much you can do about it. Just make sure it stays clean and doesn't get infected.
