Stuff like chat control still worries me more, thats from same playbook as russias new max app

Brussels has been a massive shithole for many years. it has gotten a lot worse from immigration, which is mostly trash. they also have an undercurrent of extremely racist young generation, which i imagine will have a solid boogaloo in the next 10-15 years.

Belgium(especially antwerp) was euro terror network centre according to our police back in 2010s terror attack wave

i flew through the brussels airport days before the suicide bombings. you could still make your way though the city before that without much problems if you stayed away from the mohamed occupied parts. after that, it wasn't so simple anymore. last been there a couple of years back and it's worse. gare du nord looks like you're in yemen and they're slowly creeping towards the euro institutions parts of the city.

The EU's welfare system is subsidized by the US paying for the lionshare of their defense against Russia. I don't know what you mean by it becoming like the United States.
You are living in U.S propaganda about this.
1. A lot of voters in Belgium are thinking that they are wasting their tax money and subsidizing U.S companies...
2. They often are thinking that muricans should stfu and they doesn't need nor instructions how to think and how to spend their tax money....doesn't needs any protection from us etc....
3. Lesser protection from U.S = more safety....

How are Belgian taxes subsidizing US companies, LOL? Less protection from US = more safety? By all means, please, you shoulder the burden of the grand cost of patrolling the world's major commercial shipping lanes. Let the mighty Belgian Navy lead the way.

A lot of voters are scared that they should pay tax for gubbermint to purchase F 35 ....
Also, sorry for reality, a lot of them doesn't wants that gubbermint is purchasing air defense systems etc...because Netherlands, France or Germany will not attack them.... so no problems.

Actually for their gubbermint is very difficult to approve budgets too, it is normal for them.

Yes, a lot of ppl better had to see 0.1% gdp on military not more....

Do you understand what "subsidy" means? You aren't "subsidizing" American companies when you buy military equipment from us. You're buying something.

If you think spending 0.1% GDP on your military will keep you safer, be my guest, bold strategy, Cotton, just don't expect us (or any NATO nations) to come swooping in if you find a strongman like Putin, some day in the future, decides he fancies a chunk of your land & all the nice developments you've put on it.

I never went to Brussels, I had heard it has seen better days and there was nothing of great appeal to see there

Brussels is a fantastic city, BTW.

I guess never let the facts get in the way of a good story, though.

Im interested what is great about Brussels or Belgium? All I've heard is waffles and chocolate which isn't enough tbh

I don't believe that you're interested in why someone thinks Brussels is great, but I'll still indulge you.

It's a fantastic place to visit with immense and historic architecture.

Nobody in the world thinks this looks shit - absolutely nobody:

Food is good, as you say, beer is also out of this world. Frites from the vans with frite sauce, excellent.

It's good galleries, ton of cultural stuff, and if you wanted to move there it's got one of the best healthcare system in Europe and a high standard of living/happiness rating. There is no better place in the world than North Western Europe, absolutely nowhere, at least according to every metric and stat I have ever seen.

But who cares about any of that stuff, amirite? (If you were being honest and wondering what I was gonna say, fair play, I guess I've grown very cynical on here lmao)

It was an honest question. The problem for bussels for me, beyond any reputational issues, is what unique draws it could offer for someone with limited time and money to choose it over somewhere like Italy which has endless cultural sites, great food etc at a cheaper price.

On the topic of the thread to name some great cities I've been to: London, Rome, Paris, Marsellie, Barcelona, Florence, Bologna, Amsterdam, Cologne, the locals friendly, great sites etc but all had the same issues with groups of migrants that ranged from annoying to concerning to the point I worried for my wife's safety. Those experiences combined with what I'd heard about Brussels and it not having any major draw led to it being a fairly easy skip

In 2023, most NATO members fail to pay the floor cost of 2% of their GDP defense. NATO is ultimately just an arm of the United States. Without it, Europe is extremely vulnerable to isolation and mistrust amongst one another. After the reunification of Germany, France and UK already started clutching their pearls and cozying up to the US out of worries about what would happen if Germany experienced backslidding into fascism. BREXIT already happened, there is some movement for NEXIT and other sorts of weird disintegration in the EU. If the US pulled the cord and embraced more isolations. I imagine mistiness around the EU as a institution would exacebrate.

Additionally, there is plenty of sympathy for Russia even within the NATO tent (Orban says hello). The Baltics are pretty puny by themselves. I get that you are upset that the US had not did enough for Ukraine but what can you do?

Okay fair enough.

For me, as a Northern Brit, Belgium is pretty much the easiest country to get to and well worth a visit.

I'm not one for endlessly revisiting the same places, though, so perhaps my scales and reasons are different to other people's.

I can't really remember whether Belgium was expensive or not, I think it was basically the same price as here when I went, so no issues. I found Holland a little bit pricier when I went, but that could just have been me at the time. Didn't really manage to find Amsterdam's culinary scene but that's probably my fault.

Most of those cities you list are fantastic, and much like... well, anywhere there are certain caveats and things to be aware of. The only place I ever visited where a professional actually told me not to worry about crime was Marrakech, and I found that such a bold statement it's sat with me ever since. I dunno what they do, and I don't wanna know, it's good enough for me.

I won't go to Barcelona again, stuck up twats, I enjoyed Germany and have never been to Italy.

For value for money, it's got to be Thailand and the surrounding countries, I don't get why anyone would ever go to a resort destination that's cut off from the world like you find in Mexico, and while I've been to America 5 times as a child, I won't be going back.

But as far as Europe goes, do as much as you can. As I say, North West is the shit, but Scandinavia is fucking expensive and I'm not going to be doing that any time soon outside of maybe Denmark/Switzerland/Austria if we can count them (think only Denmark is technically accurate). Eastern Europe is on my list and I want to hit up a bunch of places, Bucharest next, hopefully.

I think anyone wanting to go travel to a place, any place, without wanting any worries just isn't realistic. Whatever you want to worry about, there are people out there that will represent your fears.
