Robert Rodriguez is in negotiations to direct Escape from New York, 20th Century Fox’s remake of the 1980s cult classic that starred Kurt Russell.

Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman of The Picture Co. are producing the feature project, which the studio is hoping to launch as a franchise in the same mold as it did with its Planet of the Apes series.

The original 1981 movie that was set in a future (then 1997) where Manhattan had been turned into an island-sized maximum security prison. When the president of the United States crashes into the decaying city, an outlaw is coerced into traveling inside to rescue him.

Neil Cross, the creator of the BBC crime series, Luther, wrote the script.

John Carpenter, who directed and co-wrote the original, is executive producing the project, which is targeting a production start later this year.

The Escape dealmaking is Fox doubling down on Rodriguez, who is coming off of directing Alita: Battle Angel for the studio. The sci-fi movie is an adaptation of the popular manga and is being produced by James Cameron. Rosa Salazar leads a cast that includes Mahershala Ali and Christoph Waltz. The movie is set to open July 20, 2018.

Another remake of a classic?

Could be good, getting tired of remakes though.

Escape From NY 1 & 2 are over the top... especially 2... but I loved every minute of it.

Bring back Snake & I'm good!!!!

They should cast Chris Pratt as Snake Plissken which would be amusing since Kurt Russell plays his dad in GotG.

I'm optimistic. Film was a cult classic, but dated. Hopefully they can capture the essence of the original with better acting, fight scenes, and FX.

That might be a nice choice... but are we counting Kurt Russell out for the lead?

Great flick, but my favorite thing about the movie was the 1970's vibe to it, much like the warriors. It won't be the same in modern times. I realize it took place during the future, but the ruins were 1970's ruins like the "Chuck full o Nuts" coffee shop, what are they going to have now Starbucks?

If we're not bringing back Snake Plissken... then Plat is the only option for a replacement.

I actually still like the idea of seeing Michael Bisping in the leading role of that remake

but perhaps Perry could be the villain (or vice versa)

John Carpenter's movies and characters are too bad ass for this PC society, probably some woman looking tiny actor is gonna be made into plissken, like when they tried that guy from the pianist to be a tough soldier in Predators only for everyone to laugh at it

But hey if Carpenter needs some more retirement money i support this

The Rock as Jack Burton in "Big Trouble in Little China" would've also been terrible.

I still think Russell can handle that role and the Snake Plisken movies.

This is great news, because I remember watching the John Carpenter version, and thinking to myself 'this is decent, but if only it was directed by the guy who made Spy Kids'.

He did a great job in The Hateful Eight, I think he would be great in the remake as an older Snake, there are old guys in the can.
