Just a quick question, how come the great hoost tells them to not make any noise when they kick? I'm thinking that maybe if you're nimble on the bag it'll be better practice for when you actually are kicking a person? well everyone at my gym goes h.a.m. on the bag so i'm not sure lol.

He's saying that his version of kick chops in and directly through the target. The noise he doesn't want to hear is a slap, because a slap would indicate that you're dissipating your force across the surface of your target. It's an interesting idea I'd never thought of, but if you think about it, solid punches don't make a loud pop on the bag either, even with gloves.

Makes sense. A thud is always better than a slap.

Thanks for the video, TS.

im the OP btw, and yea, how silly of me to be unsure of what the great Hoost teaches. i sorta understand what hes on about now, ill probably experiment with it the next time i get to practice on the heavy bag.

If you hit flush with the shin there will be very little noise, it's hitting with the instep or foot that produces the loud noise.

ahh i see. i usually hit with the part at the ankle. its considered lower shin, yea?

That would be generally be considered striking with the instep of the foot (the lower shin, ankle and foot) where Ernesto, and just about everyone else, is asking for you to strike with nothing but the shin.

I remember when forrest had junior seau in for a training session he said the same thing about the slap noise when he hit the pads and then hit it without making any noise and junior was shocked to see how much harder it was.

Is kicking and punching without making a verbal sound a dutch/US? Those guys do not even seem like they are exhaling when kicking.

Anyways, in my opinion if you have a proper thai kick (i.e., step, shin, hips, and trunk rotation) you will hear a loud thud on the bag...it will not be silent. However, it might depend on the bags material and stuffing.

Ever been to a camp in Thailand? Their kicks sound like a gunshot going off.

I definitely don't kick like Ernesto. Then again, his method clearly works for him.

In fighting arts I guess that's really what it comes down to in the end. Learn it all these different ways and find which suits your body and mind best.

big will demonstrates this pretty nicely too with the shin and u can see that it makes very little noise. I for one am going to start practicing more with striking with the mid shin. i think its more of an ego thing really with most "fighters" these days thinking theyre so hardcore just cuz they can make a loud sound by kicking a bag

so i watched another video of a martial artist i highly respect, Kwonkicker, and he seems to use his lower shin/instep when doing low kicks. would he have a stronger low kick if he started using his shins?

Both are acceptable, man.

meh, ill try it out once i get to use a heavy bag. I've been using all instep to kick lately, but i really gotta start using my shin for low kicks and maybe body kicks. head kicks of course itll be hard to get ur shin up there so probably instep would be better. I really think that ernesto emphasizes the use of the shin because it works. You see thiago alves and his loud low kicks but i honestly doubt that they hurt as much as they sound

Shin is preferable. But kicking with the lower shin is perfectly acceptable, and gives you a range advantage. Just watch those elbows and knees on your ankle.
