Does Emanuel ever get brought up in these forums? Dont watch a lot of boxer but he was one I always liked. And I think he's been robbed more than any MMA fighter ever has been.

He comes up occasionally but I don't think there's been any in-depth discussion of his career or anything.

I was a fan of his & yes, it was frustrating watching him get ripped off so often but such is the life of a journeyman fighter. When a fighter like him is brought in as an opponent to fight someone in their hometown it can often be next to impossible for him to get a victory unless he knocks the other guy out. There were times when I saw Augustus clearly win seven or eight rounds out of ten & still lose the decision.

And then there were times that he just didn't show up to fight as hard as he did on other nights. He was a hot & cold fighter. Such as when he fought Micky Ward to a standstill & lost a very narrow decision to him in an absolutely great fight. But then he turned around a month or two later & gave away every round to Leonard Dorin. To call him inconsistent would be a massive understatement. Such as when he just went through the motions & lost a wide decision to a shopworn John John Molina but then turned around & gave Floyd Mayweather Jr. one of his toughest fights. Bloodying him up in the process before being stopped in the ninth round.

Augustus was a one of a kind fighter & character, that's for sure. The fact that he was regularly featured on television against top-flight fighters with a .500 record is unusual in itself. But people loved to watch him fight. Unfortunately, a lot of referees & officials penalized him for his unorthodox style & took points away for no apparent reason or even stopped his fights when he wasn't hurt at all & awarded his opponents TKO victories. It was just bizarre.

But the fact that we're still discussing a 38-34-6 fighter who's been retired for nearly a decade proves just how talented & memorable he was.

Emmanuel Augustus along with Darnell Boone and JC Candelo are atg journeymen

Augustus is a funny one for me. He was involved in some classic wars but also took some dives. I have a hard time respecting that.

Yeah, that was the Alan Vester fight & it was obvious that those were just pitty-pat arm punches that Vester hit him with. So, it was obvious that Augustus looked for a soft spot on the canvas to lie down on in that 12th round. Why? Who knows? Journeymen fighters sometimes do very strange things when fighting over in Europe.

Augustus is mentioned every now and then in here and I’d say he’s respected by most. It’s hard to deny how entertaining he was.

who know what could have been if his career was properly manage

to my recollection augustus landed the most power punches on floyd

Yeah, but he is a journeyman. It is expected you sometimes are there to make a show.

Thats not really "making a show." Looks like going down for a dollar to me.

The first fight with Courtney Burton is the best summation of this in one fight lol. Also as an added bonus you get Teddy Atlas’ rant at the end where he confronts the Athletic Commissioner who is clueless about boxing.

I always loved me some Verno Phillips too. I remember him and Candelo had beef regarding one of them having stolen the other one’s dog lol. Pretty sure he was trained by Trevor Wittman. It’s sad I think I heard Verno is in pretty rough shape these days.

I haven’t heard that name in years, very underappreciated along with other Jr Middleweights at the time, no one really cared for 154 160 during those times

Yep, I think the stranglehold Wright and Hopkins had on those respective divisions was one of the main reasons.

Verno did win the IBF Junior Middleweight title in his next to last fight against Cory Spinks though although it was quite the robbery from what I remember which was weird considering Spinks was a Don King fighter.

Yeah, that was an absolutely atrocious decision. And that was one of those times when Atlas was completely justified to go one a rant. Augustus pretty much ruined Burton with the beating that he gave him that night. Afterward, Burton went on a 1-5 skid ( including an 8 round KO loss to Augustus in a rematch ) before retiring from the sport.

Yeah I remember when a largely unknown Burton upset what turned out to be a shopworn Angel Manfredy via stoppage and had people thinking he was the real deal. He was then gifted a decision against Lorenzo and then got stopped by Diaz and the hype train was over before it ever really got going. It was fun the short time it lasted. I remember thinking he had what seemed like the perfect size/build for the weight class.

Yep, by the time Burton beat him Manfredy was pretty much walking in post holes. He was very much shot & sadly, he's not in good shape these days. He slurs his words badly & can't remember things very clearly. Some say that it's the result of a car crash that he was in after he was through fighting ( which I'm sure didn't help matters ) but in reality, he was showing signs of it toward the end of his career.

It's such a shame because he was such a nice guy when I knew him.

But I think Augustus is probably appropriately rated. I mean what other fighter with a record barely over .500 made it into the Fight Night game? He’s gotta be probably the most celebrated journeyman and or fighter who never won a major world title other than Micky Ward right?

I made a thread several years ago (it probably has been erased now) called TNF/FNF All-Stars talking about everyone’s favorite fighters from ESPN’s cards from that era and Augustus was probably the most talked about.

I watched that again last night, one judge had Burton winning 9 out of 10 rounds. Shit was wild.

That ref jumped in to save Burton every time he was in danger

I thought Phillips really exposed Paul Williams' bad defense. I remember watching that fight thinking if Williams were in with a better hitter, he likely would have got KO'd.
