Simple question really.

Do you have Eczema?
Does it affect your rolling?
How do you find other people react to it?
Do you explain to others about it before you roll?

The reason being, with the Winter being here, my Eczema has flared up quite a bit. When I roll (no gi) it tends to be quite aggrevated because of other peoples sweat etc.

Just wondering how this affects other people, how they deal with etc. I'm not personally wearing a Rash Guard with a T Shirt over it aswell as Gi pants to cover as much of myself as possible.

How bad is your eczema? Is it on your face, arms, legs?

I would say, if it's mainly on your upper body (not including your face) just invest in a long sleeve rash guard. It really won't affect your skin problem since you're not keeping it on for an extended period of time.

If it's on your face, then really theres nothing you can do about it.

I guess it just depends on how bad your condition is.

Most people assume that anything on the skin is contagious, but eczema is NOT contagious, it's inherited.

I have very minor eczema on my fingers near my cuticle, but it's so minor that 90% of the time it's not visible.

Just educate your teammates :icon_chee

is it contageous? I remember I had eczema as a kid, and it was like big red dots/pimple looking things? i only had it in one place and I remember it was nasty and I got some cream to treat it...

personally I would avoid rolling with anyone with skin rashes/diseases

theres no medicine that helps you with it? and can you transfer it through skin-skin contact? and a lot of those skin diseases look the same, so make sure you know exactly what it is and show your instructor.

I have exzema on my face and back and chest.

I would take a luke warm shower immediately after the workout(no soap just water) on the affected areas to remove the sweat, and apply a bland moisturizer(organic if possible)

Enjoy your training.

Eczema isn't contagious as said earlier, it is inherited. There are medicines that can calm it down (minor steroids that they sell over the counter...cortisone and such), but it will never go away. It usually coincides with whatever allergies you may have (or at least mine does) so for the most part for me the worse my allergies are the worse my eczema is.

I have eczema on my under side of my knees. Up and down my arms, on one part of my wrist, neck, and around my knees. I usually don't tell people and they dont ask, because if I have a flare up I just don't go to practice and I also grapple with a gi and when I grapple no-gi I use a long sleeve rash gaurd. The only thing that effects it for me is that eczema is much worse when your skin is dry. And when you sweat or when you take a shower and dry off without any type of cortisone or lotion it can be very iritating.

Do you have allergies? I know for me the biggest help for me is when I actually regularly visit my allergist.

I have eczema. It flared up far worse when I wrestled than when I roll BJJ. I get it on my arms a neck, BJJ is def worse on my neck but sometimes wrestling would ruin my arms. Rash guards do seem to work pretty well. I'm well stocked on hydrocortisone cream and try to stay on top of it so typically I'm not to bad and I can generally get rid of any redness overnight. I think once you assure people it isn't contagious they don't mind very much. I used to have to get a doctors note that said it wasn't contagious for tournaments, I never flared up at any but its a good thing to have just in case.

Its funny to say, but stress has a fairly large affect on break outs.

Man reading this I thought I wrote it! HAHA I have pretty much the same condition as you. Right now its only on my hands but a few months ago it was pretty bad.

The creme that the doctor gives me usually works initially and gets rid of it pretty fast but when it comes back, the same creme usually doesnt work that well on it and I have to use a different one for some reason.

On a side note, the few times I went to Hawaii I had ZERO Eczema or allergies. Not even a trace... Wierd

have you guys heard of cord-aid

i got some of that stuff and it doesnt seem to work

what do you guys use that doesnt require a subscription from the doctor

Moisturizing every day to keep it at bay.
Your best bet for flare ups however, is prescription cortisone or other such topical steroids.

I just wear a long sleeve rashie and use cortisone for a day or two when it gets bad.

theres one kid at my gym that has it and he told/tells everyone thats there and if they know what it is they roll with him but if they dont they kinda shy away.

I used to have it severely as a kid like on my mid arms during elementary/beginning of middle school. I kind of grew out of it but I do have minor flares once in awhile which goes away after a day of rubbing prescription cream on it. Not only did i used to have eczema but i also naturally have very sensitive and dry skin which is an annoying combination.
Anyway here are some tips that I've learned over the years and has helped alot.

-Prescription strength creams or ointments.
Chances are you have sensitive skin also.. so..
-No HOT showers, keep them lukewarm.
-Use mild body soap like Cetaphil, Dove or stuff especially made for it from Aveeno (although Aveeno didnt really help me much, just relieved the itching) but some people swear by it.
-Wear 100% cotton over the affected sites. Other materials such as polyester and wool really irritates it.
-When it becomes irritated, it will become itchy so avoid all irritation.
-Do not scratch it. I know this is hard but get some Aveeno stuff to stop it.
-Keep the area properly moisturized, I like to use Cetaphil lotion.
-I never had it on my face but i do have sensitive skin that easily gets dry so Cetaphil face wash is a great thing.
-Use fragance free detergent.

*Yes I love Cetaphil, it's perfect. Its non-cosmogedic and non-fragrance along with moisturizing rather than drying. If you get moisturizers or face washes with all that extra cosmogedic and fragrancey stuff, it sjust going to irritate it. I personally prefer it over Aveeno stuff but i havent really needed the aveeno stuff for the past 8 years since only minor flares like 5x a year which goes away after a few hours to a day.

BJJ is alot of contact though, your bodies are constantly rubbing against each other so
Wear a long sleeve rashguard under your gi. After every practice, shower with lukewarm water and a very sensitive soap, apply prescription creams to affected areas and moisturize with a fragance free and cosmogedic free moisturizer. Thats what i did for my minor flares after BJJ practice. Obviously if i didnt treat these minor flares, they become more severe and a larger problem.

Hope these tips help.

Did you swim in the ocean? I've always heard salt water was really good for your skin, and any time I go to the beach and swim any acne I may have goes away.

Yeah, I cant believe I missed that. Those really help heal any eczema or acne up.

I get excema really bad at times, and tho it is in no way contageous it does leave you more open to caching things cos your skins always open.

I wear a lon sleeve rashie under my gi to stop it rubbing too much. Before that I got a nasty infection on my forearm and couldnt grapple for like 6 weeks, learned my lesson now tho!

I had it back when I was 6 or 7, the best thing, and I can't stress enough the effectiveness of it, is to put aloe vera (not cream, real aloe vera pulp) on the affected area.

I did swim in the ocean there but Im not sure thats it because i swim in the ocean here where I live too.

Is it always prevalent and obvious, or is it seasonal?

I roll with guys who have it. I know I can't catch it so I don't care.

If I had it, I would be more concerned about other nasty contagious skin ailments that I could catch as a result of the damaged skin allowing bacteria in. ie, map herpes, staph, or ringworm.

yeah it can also burn like hell though... and can leave you all red and shit, but supposedly its good for you lol

for ts just moisterize after your showers, i have it on my inner-elbows and neck, i put vaseline on that or like heavy cream or whatever, then i put like lighter lotion on most other things, and when im done with that i like to flake on some baby powder and rub it around so i dont feel all greasy and shitty, you kind of feel fresh, but you stay white, i do it at night since most times i can go to bed and by the time i wake up im not really all that white from rolling around in sleep and stuff
