I've been training for a while at home with some friends who have either boxed, wrestled or fought mma at the amature level. I recently started going to a gym to improve my skills. I'd like to know some good drills to practice on my own for slipping and parrying punches. I don't want to become to reliant on one thing like just blocking with the gloves. It seems like 16 oz gloves would be alot more forgiving than 4 oz gloves so I would like to get better at parrying and slipping punches.

thanks!

do a search for the fedor seminar. he gives some good drills there
a good one is to have a partner throw punches straight at your face, you duck under and into him while throwing a counter punch of your own.

It's easy to forget how quick and powerful Tyson was in his pre-Buster days. Awesome.

If you have a friend and a tennis ball, you could stand against a wall and have your friend throw the ball at you at different speeds and distances to increase your speed and dodge game. I saw this when Anderson Silva was training for Patrick Cote.

Start Basic
His Jab your Overhand right
His Jab you bounce back then straight back with a right
My fav only works once or twice in a fight or spar time his jab and you squat straight down then come up with a right, serioulsy most people will lose there guard when you squat under there jab but once they are on to it they will knee you in face.
His right you go under and come with the left hook

Very basic techniques but help lots in geting your timing and movement right

Here is one drill we use at my gym to practice punch defense & counters.
With punches and kicks its not so much about just defending it is about defending and counter attacking immediatley.

You got make them pay for missing.

It includes most of the major ways to defend common punch attacks.

Milletich Punch Counter Drill

have a buddy throw 1, 2's at you and you mix it up with different parry's, slips and footwork. go like 50 percent... tell your friend not be predictable and have him actually punch at your chin.

We do something similar to the Milletich counter drill at my school during Thai Pad class. It's a good drill, but really depends on how well your partner is holding the pads and jabbing at you.

that milletich drill looks great and i do something like it with boxing mitts at my house b/c it teaches the correct movements but a problem with it is that the fighter sometimes gets too used to the combo and then he ducks it before it even comes. but its good as long as you are also doing sparring or atleast some freestyle mitt work where he throws shots at you that you dont know are coming

tie a line about neck hight, advance down the center of the line slipping between sides, do that forwards and backwards a few times and then start to add a jab
