Hey guys,
Just wanted to hear your opinions on downloading instructionals. I know most bjj instructors (even the pros) aren't getting rich, well not compared to other athletes in the the major sports anyways. Instructionals are a good way for them to earn some extra revenue.

I've purchased at least 10 sets, but recently copied a few sets from a friend. He sent me a link to a site that has almost every bjj instructional available for free download with member registration. I feel kind of funny using the site. I like owning the actual dvds and supporting bjj instructors who are willing to let us get a peak into their training.

Opinions?

It depends on what instructionals you are talking about. If it is just basic techniques I wouldn't feel especially ashamed for downloading it. On the other hand if it was more advanced techniques, systems and foremost, the instructors ideas being put forward then I would choose to buy it just because of the time and effort the person would have spent to achieve that knowledge.

IMO, if it is something that you would actually buy, then buy it to help support the instructor (unless it's something made by Lloyd Irvin). Especially if it's from someone that needs the money (that's why you won't find Ryan Hall's new DVDs out there, Cagefilm, etc... Not that I would know anything about what's on those sites, of course).

I wouldn't feel as bad though if you had the opportunity to take a private with the instructor by not purchasing their DVD.

As long as you're not making copies and trying to profit from it, no problem at all IMHO.

No, I'm definitely not selling them. Haven't even shared the site with any of my friends or teammates yet. I loan out the ones I've purchased though.

Are you trying to find people to give you moral absolution for piracy?

I feel that the prices that are often charged for the sets make pirating them very attractive to the computer savvy. If you already steal your mp3s and movies, what makes stealing bjj instructionals any different?

wtf, does this even mean?

Don't be a shithead.

I prefer buying, but international shipping fees plus the local import tolls make downloads much more attractive than they otherwise would be. I'd be really happy if I could buy a legal download, like I can with games on Steam or Gamersgate. When I bought Halls' Triangle DVD, I had to pay around $56 for shipping, tolls and fees, which upped the price by over 60 %.

Look dude, do what you want (cause a pirate is free).

Personally I like to frame it that, by learning this material pro bono (I eat ramen noodles 7 days a week, there's no way in shit I'm able/ever going to pay 200$ for two dvd's), I can become a better grappler, thus making everyone around me have to deal with a better grappler. If my teammates are better, then maybe they'll up the stakes in competition, making everyone who competes with them better. Now, take into account the other competitions those people go to, the people they train with...and bam! I just made the entire grappling world a better place.

I mean, if you had to choose between not getting super expensive DVD's and sitting in the dark masturbating, or bettering the entire world of grappling, which would you choose?

Maybe I'm just TOO selfless...

Because I feel much closer to those making the instructionals, and because for most of those who make them, this isn't a high income buisiness.

If I really like something, I want to support it. Even more so when the creators don't make big bucks.

Wait, I have to give up sitting in the dark masturbating? I need to rethink everything now.

JK, good point.

This may be the best response in the world...

Personally, if I could find a torrent of Ryan Hall's DVDs then I'd be on it in a sec. Im' too lazy to search outside of isohunt, though.

Does this make me a jerk? Yeah...

But I am not willing to pull the trigger on $$$ for some video instructional. 30-45, maybe. If Ryan had a donation site where I could send 20$ after stealing his vids then I'd be a lot more inclined to do that. :)

It might be my history as a Judo guy that I'm used to receiving instructional for much less than BJJ folks. I can't recall a Judo dvd being near that expensive...

Wonder how much he pockets from each dvd, btw.

Just a note. I buy all my music from a local record store. But if my favorite bands new album was $20+, I'd decide to torrent it instead....

I've downloaded a bunch of instructionals, I'm fine with it. I'm trying to find more actually.

They are simply way, way too expensive for me to ever want to buy them. Having them is neat, but they're only a small step above what I can get on youtube, and anyway my improvement comes from the gym, not watching stuff. Supporting these guys is cool, and maybe I'll throw some money at them eventually.

It was a joke. Relax. I'm not advocating pirating Lloyd's stuff anymore than anyone else's.

Though to be fair, 80% of his stuff is no longer being sold anyway.

You could just send him $20... My guess is he's probably making around that for each set he sells. Of course, if no one buys his DVDs because they pirate them, World Martial Arts has no reason to publish another set.
