Downgrading PS3 from 4.75 to 3.55 OFW

Hey guys,

Do you have any advice on how to downgrade the PS3 from 4.75 to 3.55? Everything I'm reading is leading me to believe that I need to purchase hardware to make the jump. I'm just having a hard time believing that I have to buy hardware when, to me, it's more of a software issue.

Any advice would be appreciated.

It allows you to mod it completely where the other firmware versions don't support certain packages.
