Dominick Reyes is a lot like Stipe Miocic.

Both guys failed to make it into higher paying ball sports which were their first goals. They then turned to MMA and are now top MMA fighters with a few years training. Miocic was a guy who didn't make it into Major League Baseball so he turned to MMA. Now Miocic is the UFC Heavyweight champion. Dominic Reyes was a 2 time all conference Safety. After he didn't get drafted into the NFL, he turned to MMA. Now he is the #1 contender of the LHW division.

D level athletes gravitate towards mma. Is normal. Greg Hardy will be HW champ in 6 months.

Didn't Deontay Wilder so something similar? Or was he just a late starter?

Doesn't make them any less of an athlete imo

theres a lot of politics involved for the major sports

In combat sports, you just gotta be good and dedicated, can't say the same for the other major sports.

Both guys wrestled as youth, failed to be Olympians, and went into ball sports. Remember when Greg Hardy trained UFC for years and still lost to a European? lol

A level athlete. Jones is in for one hell of a beating. American football is, in fact, very strong.

Yea. Deontay wilder was pursuing football and baskeball, was playing both in college. He dropped out to go to work to take care of his daughter who was born with spina bifida. He found boxing at that point and trained for 2 years and upset favorites to win Golden Gloves. Meaning with 2 years training, Deontay beat guys who were probably boxing their whole lives.

Both have crazy long torsos, too.

Stipe was also a golden gloves boxer - Cleveland champ and reached national quarterfinals, and a D1 wrestler. Pretty solid Fighting credentials pre-MMA.

"Trained UFC"

Actually he didn't know any boxing before starting MMA training. It was all learned at Strong Style. The Golden Gloves competition happened between his amateur and pro MMA career — a sort of gap year thing.

I don't think so. The position he played (defense end) is like an inferior version of wrestling - he's just dragging people to the ground in explosive bursts. So he's an 'A level athlete' for a very specific job which is 1 dimensional.

I think wide receivers are probably best suited for MMA. Explosive, but they can run long distances, can jump high, long arms. Maybe cornerbacks.

Brock couldn't even make the bum Vikings and became champ after 5 minutes of heavy bag work...

CM Punk became a UFC fighter with little training. His first opponent was terrified to strike with him and his second opponent was terrified to go 100% for fear of Punk finishing him. That sounds like a successful fighter to me. Also, Conor McGregor was scared to fight him. You also don't see GSP wanting to fight him.

Punk = WW GOAT.

he was a D-1 wrestler and juiced to the gills. Yes he had some success but didn’t last long.

To be fair, the UFC pushed him quickly to the belt. And he should have lost to carwin. That fight should have been stopped.

Didn’t know that - pretty impressive
