Does Sambo use a guard? I was just curious. I knew that BJJ and Judo did, but honestly the only Sambo fighters I've watched are Arlovski, Amir Sadollah, and Fedor. However, Arlovski and and Amir cross train in BJJ, and Fedor cross trains in Judo, so I didnt' know if you were just a straight sambo practitioner if you utilize the guards.

Also, could someone give me a brief rundown of the differences between Judo, Sambo, and BJJ as it pertains to MMA? I know that you can't really be brief and hit everything, but just the big points of each.

Thanks to those who reply, I appreciate it.

Any grappling art that has submissions utilizes the guard in some way or another. Even Catch Wrestling.

No, its against the rules to use closed guard.

maybe half guard....

Also what do you mean by how it pertains? Like a generalisation of each one?

BJJ- hierarchical grappling system based on the guard (even if you are on top - you have to pass it), probably have the highest submission IQ grapplers.

Judo- Focused on throws, trips and limited submissions. Usually their submissions lack the technical refinement of BJJ because there is limited ground game in Judo due to to the rules. Harder to transition to MMA due to the gi.

Sambo- Very similar to Judo, prehaps just with a bigger emphasis on leg locks and chokes are illegal. "combat sambo" is a recent creation that allows strikes, chokes and what have you. Aparently it is good at using strikes to transition to throws, like what Fedor does.

Not really, in Combat Sambo it is allowed but it counts as a pin anyway and you're stood up relatively quickly. The best idea is to go for a submission or sweep immediately.

Yeah they call it the scissor. This is a good question for SamboSteve. I don't know more than I have to about sambo, but I don't see why not.

The "guard" exists in all grappling arts. In BJJ it's the focal point of both bottom and top game. In Sambo, again, it exists, but it's not the central position to the style.
