His record, as of this thread, is 16-12. Damn. Can you think of another legend of the sport with a record worse than this?

Note: This not a 'dump on BJ' thread. I'm just legitimately curious.

Any fighter with double digits in their loss ratio is disqualified from GOAT discussion.

Randy Couture & Tito Ortiz have equally bad records.

maybe it is technically the worst record but he blasted Matt Hughes into la-la land one of my all time favorite mma moments soo.. I don't even care

I went to Tito's Wikipedia page and nearly lost it...

His head takes up the entire picture.

...

Anyways... As bad as their records are, BJ Penn's is still technically worse. That's sad.

Randy "The Fossil" Cotcher's is there. Both guys sought out challenges above their weight classes and stayed a little longer than they should have. BJ moreso.

Mark Hunt too. Depending on how you define his career In the context of greats. His record is worse than both.

Yes, it is. And yes he has a bad record if you just look at numbers in a vacuum.

BJ is a warrior in a sea of fighters calculating weight cuts and what is good for their career. Good on them. BJ was always looking for the toughest fight available with his eye on beating the brakes of them.

Last, at his very best, he's a top 5 fighter all time. On the best of nights, very few fighters have anywhere near the ability and offensive fighting acumen Penn did.

Not really an all timer imo. His record was inconsistent in his prime, and then he fell to pieces later in his career. Try to come back and we all know how thats going.

They should bring back Jason Reinhardt to fight BJ and hopefully get him one final win.

Just to help this thread out, BJ is 11-3-1 at LW.
That's a quality record.

Most fighters retire too late. BJ is damaging his legacy by fighting way past his prime but he is still an all time great. Had he retired after the fitch fight I think it would be clear. But he had no business being in the cage with Nick Diaz, Rory Mac, or Frankie the last time. Rory, in particular, looked so much bigger than him that it was crazy. It looked like they were a weight class apart. If for nothing else he embodied the fighter mantra "anybody, anywhere, any time." Lots of guys like to say that but BJ lived it.

It's because he didn't know when to quit. Should have retired after the 2nd Edgar fight and I've said this before he should of never fought bigger monsters a ww or heavier!

you fucking millennials dont understand

just like parents

You take the good with the bad...WW championship

Among them:

Dan Henderson: 32-15
Frank Mir: 18-11
Mark Hunt: 13-11 (was really worried about that lewis fight, becuase it wouldve tied his wins and losses, if he lost)
Randy Couture: 19-11
Vitor Belfort: 26-13
Kazushi Sakuraba: 26-17
Shogun rua: 24-10

He has a lot of lowlights but plenty of highlights.

Some of his losses are to guys he shouldn't have fought. Some are because he showed up in awful shape.
