Does beer get you more drunk than liquor?

I'm known among my friends to be a weak drinker because after a couple beers, I'm already as coordinated as my 3 year old niece. I just thought I sucked at drinking but later I realized I don't get as drunk or at least as fast when I'm only drinking liquor. One night I had a couple long island ice teas and a few shots of tequila, yet I was barely tipsy. Add in one beer and it all suddenly hits me.

I wonder if it's just me or does beer have some properties that affect some people faster. Maybe it's the fermentation process or carbonation that affects the way your body absorbs alcohol? Maybe I'm allergic to something in beer? I think I am a weak drinker but I don't think I should be this weak. Anybody else like this?

I think it's just that beer is easier to drink. Most beer masks the alcohol really well, and doesn't taste particularly boozy, so you can drink a bunch and not realize that you are consuming much alcohol.

Beer should get you drunk slower, since it generally has a lower alcohol % than mixed drinks and shots. The extra water content slows the absorption.

Most wives tales, urban legends, anecdotes, etc regarding which alcohol gets you drunker are psychological, rather than physiological.

1 beer =1 shot this is crap you learn in High School .. as to being allergic to beer this is quite a real possibility... google up my friend

First response nailed it. It's easier to slam down beer then it is with liquor.

except I'm not drinking more beer because it's easier to drink. In fact I generally don't like the taste of beer (at least the mainstream lagers) so I don't drink it that much. My friends and start off the same and I'm tipsy while they are unfazed. I am drinking literally one or two bottles and tipsy. I doubt it's psychological as well. I definitely don't think I'm imagining it.

If you are drinking piss-water like Bud and Coors, then sure. If you drink actual beer, then no, not even close.

What is actual beer?

probably something fermented from grizzly bear piss and the bark of a redwood... typical sherdog poster nonsense with nothing to back it up with

Beers w/ 10-12% abv can definitely fuck you up. But shots of liquor will always trump them in terms of fuck you up power.

Alcohol is alcohol. Whatever its form, you'll get just as drunk if you drink the same amount. Your liver metabolizes alcohol at roughly 1.5 oz of liquor per hour. If you drink more than your liver can process, it'll stay in your blood stream until your liver can metabolize it.

It depends on the amount of food you have in your stomach prior to drinking; so perhaps you don't eat as much before you drink beer since beer is more 'filling' and more volume than liquor or wine.

these are uncommon in the great vast majority of alcohol consumption .. also a shot is delivered faster than say a pint of lager in the time it takes from consumption to entering the bloodstream .. let say 5-10 min to drink a beer to 35 seconds for a shot to hit the stomach and start breaking down...

Big beers with 7%+ ABV is what Te Huna was referring to. It's actually very common if you are into craft beer and stuff.

explain ... please show me the brands of beer stronger than a shot that are readily available in the US and sold widely... i prefer science to opinion http://oade.nd.edu/educate-yourself-alcohol/blood-alcohol-concentration/bac-calculator/

To be fair, that is a pretty limited list.
8 beer on the list are Pale Lagers or something similar.
1 Dark Lager
1 Vienna Lager
1 Dry Stout

Those styles are all on the lower end for abv.
A standard American IPA or American Pale Ale range from 5.6 - 7.5%
Double IPA's, Imperial Stouts, Dopplebocks, Belgian Tripples, etc can range much higher.

i would think there is not some type of specific property in beer that makes it more potent to certain people to a significant degree. what does matter is the rate of consumption and the distribution as a function of time.

I think if you test this in a controlled fashion, i.e. control the total alcohol consumed and the timing of consumption over enough trials you will see there is probably not a huge difference.

Yeah, what I was trying to say is that the one 1 beer = 1 shot thing is true only in terms of total alcohol content. Shots go down the hatch and hit you way harder.

Oh yeah, TS, stay the fuck away from Long Islands if you value your stomach. If you want an even, manageable buzz, sip on some whiskey.

Beer gets me drunk much slower. It fills up my stomach which makes me drink slowly.

This is a good, strong beer that is delicious. First time trying these I knocked em back a little too quickly and had to take a breather.

I finish a beer in bout 10mis but a 2oz pour of good scotch takes me about 45 mins and Bourbon/rye about 20-30mins.

So beer for me, cause i drink it quicker.
