Do you think Ed O'Neill was rolling with new white belts from off the street?

Ed O'Neill started Gracie Jiu Jitsu at age 42. He was an actor at the time and a millionaire. I don't think he was rolling with a white belt from off the street when he went to practice because that would increase his risk of injury. He was probably rolling with an instructor since he was going to the Beverly Hills GJJ club and paying for private lessons? What do you think?

Ed was a stud in his younger days, he scored 4 touchdowns in a single game. When I see Ed - I also see Al, his loving and hard-working housewife Peg, and his intelligent and morally chaste daughter, Kelly.

Damn, I miss the F'n Eighties.

King Kong Bundy, a wrestler not related to Al, got a pin, A FIVE COUNT PIN, against him. I saw it on the Fox Network IIRC.

Privates from my understanding, but Rorion when was still a little young and focused, and Ryron and Rener were little kids but knowledgeable AF. I’m sure they pressure tested him very well.

I mean dude was a legit althete so his 11 year black belt journey was more about his schedule than anything else.

In the video, he said that it took him 16 years, but he says 14 years in the posted video at the actual ceremony.

Wiki has him listed as getting his black belt in 2007, which gives him a start date of 93.

Yeah, I just remembered it was a very long time, but dude is an actor and went once a week.

I started at 51 and rolled with everyone. 42 ought to be no problem, particularly for a former athlete.

I've trained with a small number of celebrities (sorry, not namedropping anyone), and generally, at least at the gyms I've trained at, they are very down to earth and will gladly train with anyone else. One who trains at my gym spent the entire class a few weeks ago working with a teenager who was there for a trial class. Maybe out in Hollywood you get more of the ones looking for the exclusive private lesson experience, but the few I've met while training have acted very down to earth and didn't treat it like they should have a special status.

I was told that both Ed O'Neill and Guy Richie took regular classes. There wasn't really anything like that back in the day. Guy Richie refused to take privates and rolled with everyone at BHJJC and was a regular dude. When he was married to Madonna she used to come watch.

He trained in Beverly Hills so I think the group was probably composed of wealthier people because that gym is expensive. I don't think he got stuck rolling with many people that try to hurt others that you would run into at a cheaper gym. I hear in some gyms there are bullies who roll hard and hurt people. It works out for them because once you sign that paper saying you acknowledge you can get injured you can't easily sue and win.
