I recently received a Manto gi size A3 for X-mas and was wondering if they shrink a considerable amount? I'm 5'10" 190 LBS. and the A3 jacket fits really big, I contacted the store where it was purchased at and the person I spoke to told me that they shrink between 3 to 4 inches. I've done a search online and on this forum and have heard conflicting stories, some say that they run big so I should buy a size down but I'm not sure if they run big at 1st then shrink as you continually wash them. Any info would greatly be appreciated, thanks in advance.

they def run big and they def shrink. i can't say exactly how much tho 3-4 inches seems possible. i got a lot of shrinkage out of mine but stopped after 2 hot dryer cycles because i didn't want the skirt to shrink anymore. the length of skirt and sleeves shrank but the girth of the jacket did not. btw i found the pants so big they were completely useless. no amount of shrinking kept them from being a good 2 sizes too big. i discarded them and use a pair from another gi.

Why not return it and order a size down? Seems like you would save yourself a lot of hassle.

Thanks for the replies, it seems as if it might be a bit of a hassle to shrink the thing in the dryer and I don't want to over shrink it. So I guess I'll just exchange it for a size down, I always wash my gis in cold water and air dry them anyway so hopefully it will prevent any shrinkage if a A2 fits just right.

Please let us know how the A2 fits...pics would be great too. I'm interested in a Manto Gi, but was waiting until someone reviewed one.

I'm 6'2" and 186lbs, so taller and thinner then you so I'd imagine that the A3 would be too big on me too.

Machete man, how stiff is the lapel on the Manto? Can you compare it to another Gi you have?

They shrink like mad. At least 3-4 inches in the sleeves, pants, and the whole body tightens up a bit. If you're 190, I'd definitely stick with the A3.

Don't worry about washing and drying it hot. It will take a few times through to shrink it all the way. My Manto has gone through at least 50 washes through our Academy's insane laundry service (which washes/drys so hot that it even shrunk the rubber in my koral/vulkan gis) and is holding up just great.

It's definitely my favorite gi right now, soft and sturdy. But I'm very slender (6'2" and 160 lbs) and the A2 is tight on me. I'll probably get an A3 next time.

One.armed.jack - can you please post a picture of you wearing your A2 Manto?

I'd like to see how tight it looks and how short the sleeves and pants are.

Since I'm 6'2" also that would be the same...I'm over 20 pounds heavier though (186)

Thanks

Thanks One.armed.jack, your info was very helpful.

tlrnick, I compared the lapel to the one of my Keiko gis, it seems to be the same size in width but of course since the Manto gi hasn't been washed yet the lapel is a bit less ridged, I'll update everyone as soon as I wear and wash it. One thing I can't get over is how long the jacket is and how baggy the sleeves are, they're very similar to Judo gi sleeves. I'll make the attempt to insert pics as soon as I can.

mine shrunk soo much had to pass it on to some 1 alot slimmer then me :(

Enemy X...what size are you and what size Gi did you have?

I love how people on this forum say the Gi fit perfect or the Gi was too big, but they rarely give their size and what size Gi, which is crucial for the post to matter.

Sorry for the little rant, but this forum is a tease...it almost gives u the info you want, but makes you ask and search a little bit longer to get it.
:D

My Manto A2 shrunk about 5" within the first 5 washes and then started to fade unevenly. My Blue gi had white spots developing.

Bump.

I just bought a blue Manto BJJ Gi 3.0 A4 (200-210 cm / 100+ kg) and I was wondering how I should wash and dry it to make it shrink and fit better for me. I'm 6'2"/187 cm tall and I weigh 230 lbs/105 kg. According to the website where I bought it it shrinks about 6-8% when washed in hot water.

I didn't get a ton of shrinkage out of mine. I replied to your thread in the Grappling forum.

Here it is

"I had the X gi, I tried to shrink it down a size and it just wouldn't shrink enough. Kimonos are hit or miss when it comes to shrinking, best bet is to warm wash and then put it in the dryer on hot for five to 10 minutes until it's just a tad under a perfect fit.

Then cold wash/hang dry to slowly go into the desired fit. It will continue to shrink over time but very very slowly."

Or you can exchange it for a smaller size if you think it's too big.

I'm considering the black Manto X A1 for my next competition gi, but I'm worried about the manufacturer patches that run down the shoulder. Does anyone know whether the Manto X is IBJJF legal?

They're legal. I see them all the time in IBJJF comps.

I have a manto 3.0. I thought about reviewing it but it is not really available anymore. However, i recently saw a manto-x review that indicated that the sizes and dimensions are unchanged. I have measured mine carefully to help me communicate with gi makers to choose my next gi.

a3 must be flippen HUGE on you! I am 6'4 and 194lbs and the body is loose on me. The arms went from a bit long, to absolutely perfect for my long arms.

I don't think it shrank a heck of a lot, though. About 1.5 inches across the total wingspan. I believe A3 is 70' out of the bag. Mine is now 68.5 after 30 washes or more. I don't own a dryer, but I was trying to shrink it, and I did wash it on a piping hot "medic rinse" setting on my washing machine.

I really don't think you will get the shrinkage you need.

If anyone else is interested, I can say that the model I have is rock solid, has a thicker collar than many of the gis that my club-mates are wearing.

They certainly do run large. The a3 can definitely fit a person up to 6'5 and probably remain legal in the arms. The pants are long enough, but not crazy. well-washed my a3 pants are 39.5" long on the outer leg. The skirt is long. Under my ass long. I'm 6'4 (192cm). A guy up to 220lbs could easily wear manto a3.

If it is of any use to others, here is a diagram of the dimensions and pics that indicate the fit. A3 on 6'4 194lbs

I've just figured out how old the thread was thus how obsolete my information is. sorry. new to the forum.

I find the Manto's cut pretty big anyways, so if it shrinks it shouldnt be too bad. I wear an A2 in Koral & Tatami, but an A2 is pretty big on me in Manto. I'd have to shrink it down. In fact a A1 fits me good out of the bag. I'm 5'10" 175 lbs.
