"Nobel Prize-winning American scientist James Watson, one of the co-discoverers of the structure of DNA, has died aged 97.

In one of the greatest breakthroughs of the 20th century, he identified the double-helix structure of DNA in 1953 alongside a British scientist, Francis Crick, setting the stage for rapid advances in molecular biology.

But his reputation and standing were badly hurt by his comments on race and sex. In a TV programme, he made a reference to a disputed view that genes cause differences between black and white people on IQ tests
.

Watson shared the Nobel in 1962 with Maurice Wilkins and Crick for the DNA's double helix structure discovery.

"We have discovered the secret of life," they said at the time.

You cant judge every genius by the knowledge of their time. Einstein for example thought all special people were related. Doesn't make him a bigot.

Differences in IQ between races is real. I don't know how anyone can dispute that. Men are also physically stronger than women, but for some reason, talking about it is controversial. Even the US Army measured IQ differences between races and also brain mass between races.

Even James Flynn walked back on his "Flynn Effect" study decades later.

Nobody has found a way to discuss any of this without people getting upset, despite the fact the the entirety of society is built around and endorsed these very same beleifs which is what evidently separates this civilization from some tribes in the sahara. This hypocrisy is equally unpleasant, yet the reverse of explcitly discussing these things cant really be done easily either without it potentially going down a bad path. It is what it is.

yea, but did he discover great jeans

97!

Must have had pretty good jea,,, uhh, genes.

And there passes a man who was always a really outstanding example of someone doing very influential work while also being an absolute sack of shit lol
truth can sometimes be distasteful

Kind of a piece of shit to give no credit to the female scientist that was critical to their discovery.

RIP. Isn't it funny how we're always told to trust the experts? Guess that won't apply in this case though. Lol
