Hey all,
HAPPY NEW YEAR! In an attempt to give myself a good start to 2012...I am going to buy my first pair of mitts!!!

I have already settled on a pair of Top Kings (there aren't products from title, cageside or other famous companies here except for the thai ones and Fairtex is a bit out of my budget) but cannot decide upon buying curve ones or straight ones.

I am planning on using it purely for western boxing (so no elbows, knees or kicks). I am 5'5 and around 115 pounds if that is any help. I am planning to go 75% or more on the pads...

So...what are the pro/cons of each and which should I get?

Thanks!

Curved, much more comfortable to hold for your partner. When hitting them I also like the "pop" sound more. I'll probably not go back to flat mitts for any reason.

Boxing is steeped in tradition and flat mitts are traditional. I personally find that curved mitts fit better, reduce shock, and allow punches to stick more into the mitt. However, if the striker is inaccurate it can cause some wrist pain for the holder.

I tried a pair of the ringside "air" flat mitts awhile ago and ended up donated them to a crossfit gym in San Jose; they would not stay on securely.

In my opinion focus mitts made in thailand are inferior to the ones made in the north america and japan. I've tried Fairtex and Boon and neither of them come close to my titles.

Curved feel more natural, both holding and hitting.

yeah, i would stick to a western brand for focus mitts. Get one of the curved options from ring to cage. clamp has some reviews and likes alot of them.

I'm pretty sure you meant made for North America.

Inferior in what sense? I'd love to get stuff from Title and other American companies. Thing is though, my friend is currently in Thailand so if I get him to buy stuff...I get to miss out on the heavy postage fees :icon_lol:

The impact absorption is basically similar, however, the problem lies in the fit.

The fairtex curved ones feel loose and the half-ball grip is tiny. Both the boon and fairtex have a smooth leather interior and get slippery fast.
