Diff between rash guards and under armour??

Well, we haven't had this question in a while... Under Armour rashguards aren't made for MMA/grappling. They aren't as sturdy, they tend to have thinner fabric (apart from XFGear... XFGear's rashguards are about as thin as you can get, but far more sturdy than Under Armour).

Can't wait until the search function gets fixed...

I find that under armor tends to have a lot of pilling (I think that's what it's called, those tiny balls of fabric) but my rash guards don't do that at all. I have had the under armor for a lot longer though.

I own mizuno and underarmor rashguards... The biggest difference I notice is the lengths. I only do gi grappling (specifically judo) but I tend to need one when I do it multiple times a day 5 times a week and my skin gets wicked dry. I find that the mizuno rash cars are cut far longer in the waste then the underarmor. My Mizuno is capable of being tucked way deep into my gi pants so that it doesnt roll up during practice. However my Underarmor guards dont go nearly as deep when tucked in and roll up throughout practice; I have to retuck them after pretty much every single round during open mat.

I am not sure about other rash guards, as I have not worn them, but from what I have seen of the other rashguards people wear at the dojo they seem to be cut more like rash guards surfers tend to wear and have much thicker and more seams holding them together in the shoulder area and thicker seams on the sides/arms.

/grain of salt.

Under Armour aren't meant to be used as rash guards...they're meant to be used as literally "under armor"...as in "underclothes" or "underwear"...it's UNDERWEAR that helps protect you better than traditional underwear does...that's why Under Armour is MUCH thinner than what we think of as rash guards...because it's UNDERWEAR...your clothes is supposed to be a barrier that come bewteen the actual UA and the object of "impact" (another person, the ground, etc.)...

Taht's why you'll end up with more lint and crap and more snagging and rolling up if you wear an UA as a "rashguard"...they work fine...but they're literally not desgined to be used in the manner that grapplers use them for...

thanks for your points of view, I too was always curious...really appreciate it...own wayyy too much underarmor

So there is a difference, UA isn't meant for grappling, rashguards are...however...
I use an even cheaper brand than underarmour i bought at walmart for 12.99 and they work absolutely fine. They have never torn or frayed. Its up to you if you feel like spending 30 dollars for a rashguard that might stay in place a little more than the walmart brand, but I save my money cause I don't have alot of it :)

I only wear underarmor...but I got 4 orange rash guards at ROSS for 4 bucksk each...You can find underarmor CHEAP at discount stores...

I've always felt Nike rashguards, particularly the ones for football, work better than UA ones for grappling. But it might just be me.

*edited* until i can find the 'facts' as i read it before.....which i doubt i will now....

i believe the football tops from Nike or UA are generally made with tougher material i think...they have reinforcements at the elbow pad area, the shoulder area...etc

In my opinion decent rashguards are much more durable then UA. To be honest I like my Starter brand rashguard from Walmart better then UA rashguard type shirts...it does a better a job of wicking away the sweat and was $20 cheaper.

hmm, looking for the source now, but can't find it anymore

I remember reading it in the Toronto Sun last year, during my phase of UA shopping. No luck now tho, all current googling gives me stock market wars with nike vs UA, so i'll have to take that statement back unless i find the article again.

damn the Sun!

I love my $12 UA type thing I got from wal-mart, works great.

I've got the cheap UA clones from Walmart(starter), Kohls(TREK) and Target(champion) and they work for me fine under a Gi much more comfortable than a Tshirt or nothing. I own true UA and they are OK as well under a gi. The only Gi rash I ever get is around the neck were neither cover. Both both fall short in comparsion to my XF and Sprawl rashies for No Gi. The UA and clones just don't fit as well as the Sprawl. and the XF so far appears to be more durable on the mats than either the clones or the UA. They just aren't built as well.

I like to think of it in terms I think most people understand. Although you can drive a nail with then bunt end of a screwdriver things just work better using a tool meant for the job, a hammer. purpose built euipment is designed for the job you ask it to do.

Now the question is are the name brand(XF and Sprawl) worth the money compared to the UA Clones. I think so. Did any of them make me a better grappler, well sadly the answer is no. But I'm working on that.

sometimes i perfer underarmor because it does a better job of cooling you off. but it all depends on wich underarmor model you use.. my friend bought a "winter gear" one and he was dieing every practice and was wondering why he was so fucken hot. We checked his rashguard and it was meant to be an insulator under football pads/baseball jerseys hehehe. SO when he put it on under his gi...

For no gi I use nike dri fit. I pick up a bunch last winter at Marshalls and TJMax for 16.99 for the LS and 12.99 for SS. While I do agree with MIDMOBOX that they are not as good, I have never gotten a rash or mat burn using what I have now. I have 5 to choose from for the price of 2 "offical" rashguards. which means a hell of alot less laundry to do. One of the few places I don't like to skimp is my shorts gotta be sprawl or tapout's.
