Once you got promoted, did you hold on to your old belt, donate it or tossed it out?

Kept them, but by like, tossing them in the closet and forgetting about them.

Not like they take up a huge amount of space.

a good reminder of years of sweat on the mat and accomplishments. never throw it out

Definitely keep it. And take advantage of its retirement to wash it for the first and only time in its existence.

They're on a rod in my closet. I don't know what I'll do with them. Maybe if my son ends up liking BJJ I'll give them to him to wear when he earns them (if we're the same size, of course).

Yeah. I keep them in the bottom corner of my closet next to a shoe box where I keep my metals.

So you're saying not to wash it even after you get your next belt? Is there some sort of procedure for transferring mojo from one belt to another that I'm not aware of?

I didn't throw them away but I also never made a shrine to them or put them anywhere special. They're definitely in a closet somewhere.

No, you should wash it fairly often. It's a belt, not a statue of the Virgin. Don't treat it like an icon. It picks up the same bacteria and mold as your gi, it's just as likely to cover a mat in ringworm as any other piece of clothing you train in, why wouldn't you wash it?

I promise you won't lose your Juju if you wash your belt.

I actually improved at a faster rate after I started washing my belt after training.

What you're saying sorta makes sense, but not sure if it's worth taking the risk.

I just gave mine away. No real reason to keep it in my opinion. But I also throw away medals after competing, so meh

This 100%. Pulling out a clean, good smelling belt is nice.
