I know groin strikes were allowed in some early UFCs, but rarely anyone tried to hit the groin. Was this because they were wearing steel cups or was it because groin strikes are not as effective as one might think?

Also does anyone know if there's ever been an MMA competition (or martial arts competition of any kind) where fighters did not wear cups and strikes to the groin were allowed?

Probably because only girls hit men in the groin. Real men don't do that shit

Stupid question btw. You should already know this shit

Not really, my question is nothing like your answer, such as it is.

Doing some more research on my own, I find this passage from John McCarthy's book Let's Get It On:

Everything else was legal. Groin strikes, which had been banned in the first event, would be admitted in UFC 2. A few of the applicants claimed they were a vital part of their disciplines and if they were allowed to execute them, they would perform better. Most of the fighters were wearing steel cups anyway, so Rorion said, "Why not?"

So apparently several fighters asked specifically for groin strikes. I guess they weren't real men by your definition?

No need to discourage others from contributing to the conversation just because you have nothing to contribute.

Cups weren't allowed.. it was a real sport back then

Also on further research, I find that the first 14 events of IVC (International Vale Tudo Championship) allowed groin strikes (as well as head butts) but the event was banned. Its new incarnation starting in 2011 follows the UFC ruleset.

Ah check this out from IVC 1 (makes you rethink the clinch):

Anyone know if cups, or at least steel cups were banned, or of any other events?

Nah, fighters just had balls of steel back then.

Not that this is high level, but it does have Bas commentating, and features multiple legal and effective kicks to the groin.

But truly I have found almost no MMA competitions where kicks to the groin were legal and at least steel cups were forbidden, which is a shame because it makes it much less realistic.

Well, the Dutch are known to play dirty so no surprises there.
Europeans in general... Remember Cup-Cheick Kongo? Gilbert Yvel? Bob Schrieber?

Crotch kick superstars.

I really wish I can find a full video of this fight between Gary Goodridge and Pedro "the Pedro" Otavio in IVC, gloriously described in this article:

With Otavio in the mount, Goodridge looks to push him off but gets his foot stuck in The Pedro's trunks. Then he leaves it there. Then he puts his other foot in. THEN (and you can't really see this, but it would later be confirmed in interviews) he squeezes The Pedro's testicles with his toes. Yes, you read that right, Gary Goodridge shoves his foot in his opponent's trunks and squeezes his balls. That folks, is no holds barred fighting.

They get back to their feet, and this testicular assault leads to a sequence where both men just try to grab each other's package. But Goodridge is, for whatever reason, more skilled in this area, and it's The Pedro who recoils in pain.

Not really. It's no coincidence that fake gold is called "dutch gold" or that splitting the tab (being a cheapskate) is called "going dutch". They are in a league of their own when it comes to pettiness.

Gilbert Yvel is Dutch. He even hit a ref once.

Events like IVC or WVC were in the true Vale Tudo spirit, [almost] everything allowed, groin strikes too..

Sergio Batarelli (IVC CEO) would often criticize modern rules, back in the days...claiming they were too "soft"

But u would rarely see them, I believe it was a gentlemen´s agreement btw the competitors...

That's interesting. I wonder if people would use those more traditional martial arts side stances if kicks to the balls were allowed
