Derek Brunson is the next new MW champ

I'm calling it now. I see something in Derek that's changed. Attitude, physicality, technique.

Last two wins were pretty legit, 5 fight win streak. But the real reason Derek will win the title is kind of unknown to most people.

He will learn a specific technique that is Israel's kryptonite: the mid-back squeeze to a variant of the upper hip toss.

Here is a similar move:



He will raise Israel and angle the TD so he smashes the back of his head on the canvas for an instant KO. Now he has the keys to victory, but will he learn the technique? I'm guessing yes, if I came up with it then he can too.

Ideas?
 
Could happen and Sherdog will trip out trying to explain how it is either a fluke or discredit anyone he ever beat. Fighters CANNOT improve, Right?

Not even a Brunson fan, but he could do it...
 
Crazier things have happened.
This is also the same dvision where Bisping KO'd Rockhold in a rematch for the belt after getting beat pretty soundly in their first fight. Bisping was 37 years old when he got the title and Brunson is currently 37 years old.

I know Izzy isn't Rockhold, but Brunson is a decently skilled guy and has definitely fought more composed since losing to Izzy and Jacare back-to-back(Both KO losses).
Wish he did this earlier in his career, he's currently got a tough test with Cannonier in front of him.

Being realistic though, Whittaker and Izzy should beat even this version of Brunson pretty easily. Those guys are just ahead of everyone ATM.
That being said, I actually kinda favor him against Cannonier for their upcoming fight.

How do you think he's going to finish Cannonier? I'm thinking a whizzer transition to a shoulder dislocation, then brutal gnp.
 
If he keeps blonde hair then yes he will become champ
 
I'd be shocked if he beats Cannonier who has great TDD and dynamite hands. Hell I'd be surprised if he survives 2 rounds.
 
I admire your optimism friend, and blonde Brunson is undefeated. But he’s got Bobby and Izzy to contend with and that might be a little too much for him as both have excellent anti wrestling ability and Bobby has improved his striking game since him and Brunson first fought.
 
He’s a beast but I think he’s likely just gonna sit near the top and be that guy people have to prove themselves against in order to get a title shot. Would love to see him as champ though.

I think Cannonier has pretty decent TDD, but he hasn't fought many wrestlers on the same caliber of Brunson which is why I'm favoring him. David Branch gave him a lot of trouble in that department, that was also a fight Cannonier took on short notice so who knows.
He could either get decision or TKO(by GNP), I doubt a sub since Cannonier seems to be pretty competent with his submission defense. This fight being 3 rounds favors Brunson more IMO since his cardio hasn't looked too great in the 4th and 5th rounds.

Both have great power in their hands, however Cannonier is the superiour striker(way faster too). Brunson cannot do sloppy takedowns without setups like he did against Holland.
We've seen what happens when someone does that against Cannonier in Hermansson.

Patience and setting up his takedowns properly is key for Brunson here.
 
I used to bash Brunson for his previous wild sloppy ridiculously overextending while chasing attempting to land a punch-iness, but he has been putting it together really well with his hands in his last two fights. Combined with the wrestling he is a real threat.
I don’t know about beating Israel though….
 
Fighters that would beat Brunson:
- Adesanya
- Whittaker
- Vettori
- Chimaev
- Muniz

Not sure about Tarzan.
 
Brunson's consistency of late also reflects on the wrestling at MW. Adesanya has become a pretty good defensive wrestler/grappler, especially against the cage, and also in their fight. Brunson would need to take him down in the open every round and keep him there for the majority of rounds, or he's getting outpointed and eventually hurt on the feet. It's a longshot.
 
Meh. Even during his win streak it seems like any shot can take him out but he's done a great job getting it to the ground. Cannonier, Whittaker and Izzy all have better takedown defense than the people he's faced recently. I could see them giving him Vettori if he beats Cannonier which is another horrible matchup for him.
 
No he must learn the hadouken if he has any chance of winning the title
