Some guy tried to "leg scissor" me from his guard - basically he was trying to crush my torso with his legs alone. It wasn't quite enough to force me to tap, but it was very unpleasant. Does anyone know any tried and trusted techniques for getting out of this move? The best counter I can think of off the top of my head is to go for a standing pass as soon as he tries it.

im probably picturing this the wrong way, he was just squeezing his knees together when you were in his guard? if nothing else helps, tucks your elbows in.

Well first off, this is not an actual move I don't think. I do it sometimes to tighten my guard up if I feel it's slipping a bit, but to try to make someone trap from it, in training no less, is pointless. I would pin their hips to the mat. This will either annoy them back with pain or force them to loosen their grip. Pinning their hips to the mat is a good way to start passing guard, so you'd be doing something legitimate while they're just squeezing.

Suck it up and keep allowing him to do it. Wait one minute then look at his sweat covered, exhausted face. Then pass his weak and newly hard worked legs with ease.

If he is going to do some cheesy crap like that, I'd respond in kind. Just sit there and keep your elbows in and dig them into his inner thighs. That or can openner him (just be aware of the possibility of the armlock while doing it). If he's going to try to hurt you hurt him back, that's the way I look at it.

Fuck that. Just keep tight and wait him out and he'll be all rubber-legged in no time. What rank was the guy who did this to you. I'm not one to slag shit over the internet but that definitely sounds like a noob move to me.

You guys havent seen ribs get cracked because of that move?

...I have. Of course it was a rather thin out of shape older (34) beginer that didnt have the body of steel that most of you grappling beasts have. But he did get a broken rib from that move that endeed his career.

Not that I think it is a great move by any means and nobody have ever hurt me with it, but still just a precausion since most of you are saying "just take it". ....Usually if it hurt bad shit can potentially happen.

LOL. There was a video going around of a guy who was getting leg-squeezed like that and actually puked on the guy doing it. The guy that got puked on got all pissed off.

yeah that was some comical shit! definitely a tad cheesy though

I've seen people get submitted with leg scissors on the head/neck in expert division matches, lol.

There really isn't a good defence against this. Back when I mostly grappled without time limits I used to use it to tire out small/fast opponents. I started using it again a few years ago after I learned to lock my hands with my arms outside of my knees. I recall catching an experienced grappler much bigger than me with just the legs once (he jumped up screaming "I cannot believe I just tapped to the f*cking guard!"), but I just happened to catch him at exactly the right angle. These days I only use it to teach people not to be lazy in guard as there isn't much point in training it. I am pretty confident that if I snap the leg scissors on it will break ribs, especially if I have it positioned over the floaters.

You should be able to wait it out on most people, but I wouldn't depend on it unless the clock is on your side. I used to hold it for 5-10min straight without significant gassing.

To me this move is right up there with pinching, putting your chin in the guy's eye, and noogies.

The only way that kind of thinking is justified in my opinion is if a guy is actively trying to break an training partners rib, -just as any case of injuring team mates and training partners on purpose regardless of tech-

....But if a move has the power to break ribs within a ruleset it must atleast be considered a viable alternative, altough it can be discussed whether or not it is an effective option and if it is easily countered or not. But cheap? No not if it works.

With all that said it is usually a noobs offence and thus easily countered.

stand up, pulling his upper bpdy up off the ground. then with both hands push down on one leg. It shouldn't be too hard to escape from if you use proper guard opening techniques.

Haha that's what I did although believe me it was fucking painful! Not enough to tap but it sucked the energy from me.

Believe it or not, the guy who made that video is one of our instructors. That's how my sparring partner learned that move. Perhaps I should ask the instructor how to get out of it?

Yeah he was a white belt although not really a true "noob". He's a good mate actually, although it pissed me off that he tried the leg scissors. It wasn't enough to make me tap but i could see it causing internal damage.

Me and my friends use this all the time to break the other guys posture, and against people who arent used to it often leads to triangles.
The only real way to defend it is to do what ricrac said
