In this or any similar situation, if a fighter throws a clearly illegal strike and their opponent dies (or suffers any traumatic life-changing injury), would criminal charges then come into play? Would civil action in the form of a lawsuit be allowed?

I suppose it's all about what's in the legal documents a fighter signs, but surely there is some line that can be crossed in the eyes of the law. Like, you couldn't sneak a gun into the Octagon and shoot your opponent and it be fine just because it happened in the cage during fight time.

I doubt it. By that line of logic a non-lethal illegal blow would merit an assault or reckless endangerment charge, which never happens.

Well the "dark speculation" bit in the title sure is fitting for the thread

That said not sure what would happen but it happened in other sports before. IE : The Todd Bertuzzi hit on Steve Moore in the NHL (although i don't think it's a very comparable situation)

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh fuck off.

Yeah I believe shit like that is usually included in a waiver.

If you die from an illegal strike or a late stoppage, that's on you. You acknowledge that you're willingly participating in an extremely hazardous and unpredictable activity.

I just thought it interesting to speculate on what could happen in such a hypothetical scenario like I proposed. I wasn't saying I think Yan should have charges pressed against him. Get your panties out of a twist.

don't these guys sign some form of paper which kinda waves a lot of legal responsibilities?

Waivers wouldn't necessarily absolve the offending fighter or the organization of all legal repercussions. Things like prenups and ToS agreements are often thrown out in court. I guess it would ultimately depend on the jurisdiction. If a prosecutor wanted to step in with charges, he or she will do so if they think they can make a case and have a hate boner for MMA.

So how are you going to prove he threw an intentional illegal hit? Lie detector?

The laughs never end.

Did you see Khabib's team jump the cage?

Looks like you've already answered your own question then.

You’re on to something here.

Yan is going to sneak a gun into the rematch and shoot Aljo dead in an epic heel turn.

Then Dana will take the mic and say it was his plan all along and raise Yan’s hand and say the new era of the UFC has begun.

Then Khamzhat will run in and take out both waging war on the boss, and that the covid thing was all a ploy.

I never thought of it like that before. Good going TS.

Honestly this. It would be an easy defense even IF it wasn't covered in the waiver. Criminal prosecution has 100X the burden of proof of silly who-gets-belt rules being the discretion of a few guys on a moment's notice. I'd have a field day if I was that defense lawyer as to what is reasonable to assume in the context of an MMA fight vs sending a guy to prison for the rest of his life for fighting in a sanctioned fight.
