I think this is kind of forgotten but Ben Affleck was in the pretty big Marvel movie, Daredevil back in 2003. It is a pretty good movie that stands on its own and is deserving of a B/B+ but didn't have the spark that Ironman did which came 5 years later. One of the things that I find kind of funny about this is that Favreau is in the movie and would later direct the script adlibbed Ironman. I think what really put the nail into the coffin on Daredevil is that they spun off Electra with Jennifer Garner, which was pretty bad and led to Daredevil basically being cut off and later retconned.

This Marvel universe was probably in many ways much closer to the source material and comics, which was dark and gritty and not aware of itself. Later, came Ironman and Guardians of the Galaxy and the Marvel Universe became about being a wild ride with bunch of jokes. I don't say that to denigrate Marvel but like DC, the first attempt was much more gritty.

I always liked it, Affleck was good in it and has 2 underrated villains with Colin Farrel and Michael Clark Duncan.

The Xmens, spiderman 1 and 2, Daredevil, Thomas Jane punisher, fantastic four, and hulk represent that pre iron man Marvel movie universe in which there was a time you could've made a successful crossover movie between them.

It was also a time when superhero movies that weren't batman and superman were still new, cool, and not played out.

B/B+?

It was a hard C- at best.

I don't know your rating system but it was better than Thor 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 had a few moments but wasn't worth a rewatch. That is my opinion but you are entitled to yours. I would appreciate it if you fleshed out your reasons.

It has its moments but falls flat in others, I think a B- is being generous but could be the correct score rating in terms of overall quality.

Everything was trying to copy the Matrix at the time. Honestly, this chorography is probably a little better than the last Matrix movie. I can't figure out how they messed up the chorography so much that the fight scenes were all worse than the first movie. Even today, the Matrix choreography is carried on into the John Wick movies. The fight scenes in Daredevil only look bad in the context that we have been seeing this style of action for over 20 years now and it isn't new or novel.

also a time when a black guy could play a white character and everybody just said 'cool, he's a good actor' instead of gushing over how ground-breaking and 'historic' it was

Guardians 2 was actually funny though and the cast had chemistry. I'd give the B to that and stick by C- being generous for the Affleck Daredevil.

Depending on the episode, netflix Daredevil was A to B+ and this was nowhere near it.

Need specifics? Everything in the film felt dry, fake, and cartoonish.

The movie that really deserves credit for kicking off the marvel craze is blade.

After blade was a hit, studios were willing to take bigger risks with movies like X-Men and Spider-Man.

Before blade, I can't think of a single hit movie based on a marvel character. The closest you could get was the lou ferigno hulk TV series

DC was way ahead with their Superman and Batman movies in the 80's. My how things have changed.

Yep Blade was great. I even liked the third one which a lot of people didn't like. Apparently it was hell filming it though cause Snipes was getting high all the time. According to Patton Oswalt anyways. The director semi confirmed the allegations as well by saying he doesn't communicate with Wesley anymore but is still friends with Patton and that's all he would say about being choked by Snipes.
