We've seen some fighters take that route.

It's weird when they do, though, unless they actually aren't able to continue.

It would've been great for his career but I don't think anyone would have seen it as a legit loss.

DC''s a vindictive idiot. The UFC already had Smith under contract. It's not like he was a free agent. They don't automatically give PPV points or rip up contracts because someone got a fluke win. There are actual champions who didnt even get PPV points.
They'd have immediately made him rematch Jones and if he wouldnt do it, they'd cut him. The idea that he'd automatically get some fantasy contract and huge money is a pipe dream.
