Dan Hooker’s re-experiment at featherweight is done.

In March, Hooker (21-12 MMA, 11-8 UFC) returned to 145 pounds for the first time since 2016, but was quickly stopped by the streaking Arnold Allen at UFC Fight Night 204 in London.

Although he had no issues making the weight, including a successful test cut prior to fight week, “The Hangman” thinks it’s best if he just moved back up to lightweight.

“Oh, f*ck no – I couldn’t make 145 if I wanted to,” Hooker told Submission Radio. “I felt like I could’ve stayed at 145, but obviously a lot of sacrifice goes into that. But off of the result of the last fight, and then I feel like I’m in the exact same position at both weight classes – so why not? Why would I make the extra sacrifice? The extra sacrifice was to get me back in the same position that I was in. You know what I mean? But if I’m in the exact same position (relating to the title picture), I’d rather be in the exact same position and eating and having a slice of cake every now and then.”

Hooker has lost four of his past five and two straight. He fought four times in the past 14 months, including twice in the span of a month, but will look to take some much needed time off.

“I’m just chilling,” Hooker said. “I should have a good amount of time off. I should just have a good reset. That’s one thing I realized, as well: I’ve just been kind of chasing my tail the last couple of years. I’ve just put the shovel down. I’m still in, like, shovel down mode. I’m thinking, f*ck, how do I get out of this situation? We’ll see. Maybe when the UFC comes a little bit closer (to New Zealand).”

As for who’s next, Hooker has never been one to back down from a fight and he doesn’t expect that to change any time sooner.

“It’ll be whoever it’s going to be,” Hooker said. “Obviously I have my inklings, but it’ll be like all those other situations. You run back and you look at who I’ve fought, you just look at the division and ask yourself, who don’t people want to fight? And that’s who I’ll probably end up fighting.

“Like, who’s getting turned down left, right and center? That’s who I’ll fight next. So you can take a look at the division. Ask yourself, ‘Who doesn’t anyone want to fight?’ That’s the guy. That’s why I’m not that fussed about. I can get back in the mix. I can get back in the mix in a heartbeat. You can’t count a dog like me out of the game. That’s just not how it works.”

I really don't know where Dan goes from here.
He's only lost to top guys, but those last few losses have been him getting finished with very little difficulty.
That being said, he put up a hell of a fight against Dustin.

Dan is still ranked 13th at lightweight so he's going to probably matched up against an unranked prospect, most of them being killers at lightweight.
Not a lot of easy fights available for him tbh.
I think they match him up against the Damir/Guram winner or Grant Dawson.

A fight between him and Riddell would make sense and be cool, too bad they're friends/training partners.

Dan is just not that good.
His best win is incredibly close fight vs Felder and a win vs a semi retired dude
He peaked when he went life and death vs Dustin and Felder.
The highest ranked guys he can beat at 155 is TFer and Gillespie (7+8)

Needs a step down in competion. Let him defend his spot in the rankings against a borderline guy. Then fight a lower ranked guy or two if he wins that. If he wins all of those, give him another shot higher up.

Dan is just one of those guys that will always beat guys ranked 10-15 but lose to the top 8. He will always bring it and never be in a boring fight.

I really hope the UFC matches him up with someone similar. I'd love to see him fight Drew Dober.

Hooker needs to fight a guy at the bottom of the top10 at best at this point.

Hooker need a break and put some muscles and strenght into his frame. That Will help him against wrestler. What hell was that idea of wanting to fight at 145 when you're 5'10..

These guys just recycle Eugene, Colby, & Hooker interviews over and over.

Love submission radio, but the guest repetition is brutal.

Had to unsubscribe.

Arman Tsarukyan is looking for an opponent.

So, beating the seventh and eighth ranked guys in your division means you're not that good? That's funny, lol.

Dan Hooker has earned my respect by having heart and toughness for days. Looking back on his career so far in retrospect I do think he is one of those guys who kinda got figured out from people being able to watch tape and gameplan.

Earlier in his career he was destroying guys with his knees but I'm sure if you're a high level fighter and you get matched up with Dan you probably are super focused and aware trying to not get caught with one of those.

There are other guys who had a similar problem like Wonderboy and Anthony Pettis. They were very good at certain specialized KO techniques and once people started to get enough tape to gameplan for them they got figured out.

There's nothing wrong with being a good not great fighter

Not as good as he think he is.

Number 7 and 8 are not as good as all the guys he lost to or wanted to fight recently.

I think we all saw this coming. From the outside, it seemed insane for him to drop down to 145 at this point. And he looked like death doing it. And to make matters worse, the UFC gives him a guy who's on a 10 fight win streak and undefeated in the UFC as his first opponent at 145. It was just a horrible situation.

I'd be more interested if he bulked up his long frame and moved up to 170. Of course he wouldn't be champ there either, but he could have some fun interesting fights and might carry a surprising amount of power with a filled out frame and not having to kill himself with a weight cut.
