I was watching the "Chess boxing" game on youtube: View it here.

This got me thinking about doing something similar with BJJ and chess. The two games are often compared with each other. So maybe soon at a practice, I will have us do that with BJJ instead of boxing. How do the following rules sound:
  • Win by checkmate, by submission, points/advantages, or ref's decision.
  • 3 minute rounds of grappling and chess. 6 rounds max.
  • 30 seconds between moves in chess or positions in grappling. NO STALLING!
  • Alternate grappling rounds starting between neutral, top guard, and bottom guard.
  • Otherwise standard US Grappling rules.
I'll strictly enforce stalling to keep things moving. After a verbal warning, I'll give 10 seconds to move. I'll use US Grappling rules for stalling point deductions in both chess and grappling. I will allow a position to be kept for more than 30 seconds in grappling as long as I feel they are working for something.

Should I add anything? I'm not trying to make is serious. Just an interesting option instead of just rolling.

Actually, some gyms do this already. You make a move and your opponent counters and back and forth. Slow, methodical, precise moves. It can be good, but I found that guys get bored with it. I would stick with rolling for flow at 50% IMHO, but hope it works with your class.

No, I know both of those drills, and we do them too. I mean a round of grappling followed by a round of REAL chess...

I'm a lock!

I learned chess from a Russian while serving in Bosnia!!!

Are we having weight classes, because if not..I rule!

I'm sure a bunch of people are going to come in here and tell you what a stupid idea that is, but I love it.

I would love it, but unfortunately I'm not very good at chess (I've only played once since I was 8).

How about you replace chess with a video game. I'd fuck some bitchez up in that!

I'll meet you at the Street Fighter 2 game. If I win, you have to tie your hands behind your back for our roll.

You sneaky purple belt!

Actually I don't think it would be fair for me to play you in street fighter 2 without my hands behind my back. It'll make it more interesting if I have to hit the buttons with my nose.

J/K I suck at 2D fighters. How about a 3d?

I hate chess, last time i played I got beaten by an 9 year old, he suffers from auspergers but nonetheless

Lol, I haven't won a game of chess in 7 or 8 years. Now if it was Bjj and Scrabble....sign me up!

How about a variation where you choke the guy unconscious and drag him in front of a chessboard set up with a tactical problem. Then the clock starts and he has 10 seconds to wake up and make the correct move.
