Hey,

I've never taken creatine when competing because I felt it would do more harm than good when it comes to cutting water weight. I'm a pretty good responder to creatine and was thinking about taking it again, and then stop taking it a couple days before I start cutting weight. I don't plan on cutting much (between 5 and 10 lbs).

What is everyones take on this?

I believe the issue of significant water retention is more an issue with the older shitty types of creatine. I didn't notice any significant weight gain at all after i started taking 5g a day of creapure creatine monohydrate.

I'm not really too worried about the water retention actually. I'm more concerned about cramping due to dehydration while taking creatine. Also i think i read awhile back some wrestlers cutting weight and ended up dieing while they were taking creatine. Whether this is a direct result of creatine or cutting weight improperly along with whatever else they were using to cut weight (i.e. diuretics)...still makes me hesitant, and figured i should probably do some research before doing a cut while taking creatine.

i actually talked about this with my coach this weekend. he was a freshman at Minnesota when those 3 guys died. back then, weigh ins were conducted a day before the meet, so people would cut a lot harder, since they had so much time to replenish. also, he mentioned that almost everyone was on creatine. it had its definite health drawbacks when combined with cutting weight, but it helped performance. he said looking back, creatine is something that should only be used in the offseason, or if you're light for your weight and dont need to cut. i personally have never used creatine, but im just repeating what we talked about. he was a 3x AA at the division 1 level and an outstanding coach, so i trust him on this one personally.

If you are trying to cut water weight for a weigh in don't take creatine monohydrate. But I have some questions before I can help you more. Are you a wrestler? If not what sport do you compete in?

This would be for mma. I normally have no trouble cutting water weight at all but I like taking creatine but have never combo'd the two. I'm thinking maybe taking creatine and then the week of stop taking it.

i'm still surprised no one has any experience with the two. i thought for sure there would have been someone who would of tried it.

Well I definetly wouldn't suggest taking creatine monohydrate while trying to cut water weight. They contradict each other since creatine helps store water in the muscles. I don't think it would hurt you to get off the creatine while cutting weight. It wouldn't be that long and you can get back on it later.

Purely anecdotal, but I've tried it multiple times and every attempt at cutting water weight while on creatine lead to pretty severe calf cramps. Even taking potassium and quinine didn't help.

Personally, I'd recommend against taking creatine when cutting water weight.

I remember one of my wrestling teamates complaining about the exact same thing.

Sounds good. So i'm thinking ill take creatine...than a week or two before competing i will stop taking it and still get the benefits of it without having to worry about the cramping and other problems associated with dehydrating yourself on creatine.

Sound like an alright idea?

i am usually about about 6 pounds over night. i started taking creatine-or kre-alkyn i only cut 3 and had stiff thighs the next day that would not loosen up. than god i got a forfeit...
