When I heard Michael Chiklis was returning to TV for the first time in long while I knew I wanted to check it out. The Shield, Chiklis's most successful series, is my #2 series of all time. Add to that, the setting of southern California in the desert with border patrol and mexican characters reminds me of Breaking Bad, my #1 favorite series of all time. And its on a streaming platform so they can include R-rated material.

The plotline is pretty basic... experienced border patrolman who just retired is being blackmailed into helping the cartel, or his family is murdered... but basic plotlines can still be awesome if the execution is awesome.

So... is the execution awesome? No.

The whole feel of the show seems like it was originally supposed to be on CBS but with swear words tacked on and the small levels of gore could have been easily edited out. After I watched all 6 episodes I discovered it was originally supposed to be on Paramount Network, but for whatever reason its now on CBS All Access. So the mature content is very half-assed as if they hoped it could be cut out in the editing room so it could make network TV.

Michael Chiklis is good in the role, but nothing anywhere close to what earned him a Golden Globe on The Shield. Can't say any of the other cast had impressive performances either, all very stock, but that's because the script are good... not great. There's nothing impressive on the page for the actors to give a great performance to.

The pacing feels like they wanted to make a drama but with some action scenes, but at many points it gets really slow like a typical drama. This is perhaps the show's biggest flaw... with a show about a man and his family is being threatened there's absolutely no excuse for it being BORING at times.

Although its a short 1st season at only 6 episodes I was expecting some resolution and a twist to get excited for a 2nd season... and there was one interesting development in the last scene... it didn't seem like an ending but like they stopped shooting halfway through what they thought was going to be a 10-episode 1st season. (Wikipedia says Paramount greenlit a 10-episode 1st season, and there's no explanation why there's only 6).

So I went into this series with high expectations because it has elements of my two favorite TV series of all time, and without the censors those shows had to work around. And... it does not come close to exceeding those expectations. I'd recommend watching this only if you're a huge fan of The Shield & Breaking Bad, and perhaps other people should check it out later if it gets a 2nd season.

Initial rating - 6/10. Good, not great.

Additional note I just realized as I'm typing this review... I mentioned it has elements of The Shield and Breaking Bad, but there's one additional show they COULD have added elements into to make it awesome... 24.

If they had fixed the pacing by making it a more action-focused show about a man doing favors for the cartel, taking on his own border patrol co-workers, being labeled a traitor, and trying to find his family that's been kidnapped it would have made this show from being a 6/10 CBS AllAccess show to being a top-rated CBS PrimeTime show on Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday.

Oh, and also I saw some promotional articles implying this show was going to have a political/social issue themes regarding immigration, and I can usually smell those subliminal messages a mile away but I didn't get that feeling at all while watching the show. In fact the show's antagonists actually send the message we need to keep those bastards out of the country.

Unfortunate,it was definitely something i would have checked out.

Yeah, the more I think about it... how it looked like it was given the production budget of a CBS primetime show, then was supposed to go to Paramount Network, and finally CBS AllAccess... along with the episode reduction from 10 to 6... it seems like they weren't satisfied with the show as they were filming it, and rather than continue production they'd just put it on the streaming platform to see how well it would do. Maybe they thought the could renew it for a 2nd season, maybe they knew it was going to get cancelled anyway.

The fact the only promotion I've seen for the show was a short commercial on CBS is a bad sign. No online presence whatsoever.

Probably gonna get cancelled.

That's a bummer, was hoping Chiklis could return to Mackey-like form with a grittier character...like Vic Mackey...

i saw a few episodes of The Shield,

and the suspension of disbelief requirement was too much for me...

i just couldnt picture "The Commish" as Denzel Washington in Training Day... maybe i missed out.

I'll still check this out. Hadn't even heard of it until you made this thread, thanks

I'm currently binging the American Horror Story series, and I just finished season 4 which had a lot of Chiklis in it

Trust me, you missed out.

You definitely missed out.

i always felt like it was if "Monk" was all the sudden playing Riggs from Lethal Weapon- hes just no Mel Gibson.

but viewing choices are low lately, maybe i will give it a shot. ive seen bot hof you recommend other things i thought were very solid.

I never knew him as the Commish, so I had no preconceived notions going in.

It's not just Chiklis either, Walter Goggins and CCH Pounder kill it in their roles.

and after he appears you will never look at Anthony Anderson the same again.

If you get hooked though, avoid spoilers at all cost.

A buddy of mine was complaining there's nothing worth watching anymore, so I asked him if he's seen a number of things I liked and he said yes to them all until I suggested The Shield. He said...

"That cop show on FX in the early-to-mid 2000s? From what I remember it looked like it was trying too hard to be different than other cop shows."

Me - "Isn't that a good thing? Being different than the typical formulaic cop show?"

Him - "Well, yeah."

Me - "Have you watched the first episode?"

Him - "Nope, guess I just judged it by the short commercials way back when."

Me - "Watch the 1st episode sometime, and let me know what you thought."

2 weeks later...

Me - "Ever watch that 1st episode of The Shield?"

Him - "Yup, great series. Was far better than I ever expected."

Me - "Wait... not the 1st episode... but the entire series?"

Him - "Yeah, all 88 episodes. I basically marathoned it over a week and a half."

@leatherneck

Basically damn near everyone killed it in their roles.

And Glenn Close, Anthony Anderson, and Forrest Whitiker have guest roles that last entire seasons and they absolutely killed it.

I honestly can't think of a bad performance by anyone in this show's entire run. Not one.

I tapped out of The Shield during season 1 a couple of times, but the third time I powered through and pretty much from Season 2 onwards I was hooked. It's an ATG for me. Would def recommend giving it another shot someday

Season 2 was one of my favorites along with 4.

Probably why 3 is my least fav, because its sandwich'd between two great seasons.

chiklis has looked 60 years old his whole life

Its amazing to me he's one of the few actors that's thrived while looking drastically older than he actually is.

1991 - The Commish. He was 28 years old.

2001 - The Shield - 38 years old.

2014 - Sons of Anarchy finale. 51 years old.

The only other actor I know that looks far older than he actually is Wilfred Brimley who's first notable role in The Thing he was 47 years old and looked like he was about to collect social security.

6/10 rating for a cbs show is basically 100% in real life. Suspicious
