Was going to post this in the heavies but wanted to avoid the knuckledraggers.

This issue came up after Benson thanked God after his win over Diaz. A few threads popped up and lots of religious arguments ensued.

So my question is:

Should we care whether he does it or not?

Some people were enraged and said he should keep his mouth shut. Others thought that he'd put in the hard work and had earned his 5 seconds on the mic.

I'm of the opinion that he has been in the gym training hard for 11 weeks, and has been starving himself for the better part of a week to make weight. He put on a dominant performance and I feel (a) he has earned his 15 seconds in the spotlight, and (b) he should have the right to thank whoever he felt got him through (whether or not I agree with him)

No, because i dont care, really.

I don't really care but I do know that if a fighter said " I am an atheist, there is no god. I won this fight because of hard work and good coaching." People would flip. Double standard really. But again, I care about fighters thanking god as much as I care about them thanking a sponsor I will never buy from.

A fighter could worship Big Bird and Cookie monster for all I care

I don't care what religion a fighter follows

I don't even watch post fight interviews so I don't really care what religion a fighter believes in. It would be different though if he went on some incredibly racist/offensive rant, religion not so much.

Thanking God after a win is ok with me. I always think it is a bit corny though. Dennis Hallman was hilarious when he said something along the lines of wanting Jesus to come back soon (meaning the world would end) because we need it.

Somebody did thank science back in the day.

I'm an atheist and It doesn't bother me one bit who he thanks.

Randall Cunningham was always the best interview because he could turn any question into religious discussion the segues were always awesome.

I couldn't care less. It's not his fault if he was raised by a bunch of religious people, or in a country obsessed with whichever god.

Yeah because that's arrogant

Thanking God makes you sound humble

I don;t care about the religions of the fighters. However it annoys me when they talk too much about. matt hughes made my skin crawl

That's good, because Muppetology is great religion, and if everyone followed their teachings everyone would share, and be nice and know how to read.

It was funny when he was on TUF and was getting the guys to read a bible verse he wanted to quiz them about

Mac Danzig didn't want to have a bar of it

There's something wrong with you if you're bothered by stuff like this.

I think every fighter is arrogant. Some hide it better post fight, but it takes an arrogant attitude to step into a cage or ring and think to yourself , "I am gonna beat this guy up in front of a bunch of people."

But I do agree, people who thank god seem more humble. I would rather them thank their parents and ancestors for the good genes.
