The Indy franchise has long been one of my favorite film franchises of all time. And I know I've seen several posters around here mention how much they enjoy the Indy films as well so I figured I'd share a few resources for those who might be interested.

TheRaider.net

Easily the best Indy site I've ever found. Not only is it very attractively designed but it also has a ton of great information about the series.

indymag

A great magazine exclusively devoted to Indy stuff, issued in both print and digital form. You can subscribe for free to the digital edition.

The Indiana Jones and the Monkey King Script

There were several ideas for Indy movies that never came to fruition. Indiana Jones and the Monkey King got farther than most, and a script was even written by Chris Columbus.

You can read more about this Indy that didn't quite make it here:

Or you can read or print out the actual script here:

Indiana Jones was good but it never made me feel the same as In Diana Jones did.

I can never unsee that South Park ep where Spielberg rapes Indy.

Crystal Skull > Temple of Doom

Come at me.

TS, you know about the fan-film those kids made for RAIDERS, right? Took them like twenty years to complete it, starting with childhood summer projects. Shot-for-shot recreation.

The original was so good... I think I was 4th or 5th grade when it came out. Just enough creepiness.... but not too much. Like the poor guy who got splatted by the airplane prop. My little overactive imagination back then more than filled in the details for what they didn't show.

Yeah, I'm aware of it. That's pretty crazy.

What's interesting for me personally is that I spent a lot of my childhood in Mississippi and these kids were doing their thing in Mississippi at the very same time. So unbeknownst to me, just a couple of hundred miles away, there were some kids making a Raiders recreation that I would finally learn about 30 years later.

BTW, if you're not aware, there was a documentary made about the whole thing:

One of my favorite franchises ever. The trilogy is one of the greatest trilogies ever made where each film was consistently amazing.

KOTCS was fucking ass though. Just an absolute embarrassment and slap in the face to the franchise and each and every fan. It may very well be Spielberg's worst film. But I put the blame fully on Lucas' shoulders since that hack basically forced Spielberg to go that route.

Looking forward to Indy 5, though I'm not sure really what to expect with a nearly 80 year old Indy. That's bonkers. I say they should just go for it and go all out with the action. Screw it. I don't want to see slow grandpa-Indy again. I want 80 year old Indy but with Raiders-level action.

Do they ignore the existence of IV like everyone should?

And for God's sake I hope they fix the lighting and color for V. It was way too bright and glossy and just looked terrible in KOTCS. It looked nothing like the original trilogy.

Agreed. The original trilogy is as strong as any other trilogy ever made. In fact, not just as strong as, but stronger than most.

The Dark Knight stumbled with TDKR. The original Star Wars trilogy falls apart a little with Return of the Jedi. The Godfather trilogy suffers a bit from the relatively weak Godfather III. And we all know what happened with The Matrix.

In fact, just off the top of my head, the only trilogy that I can think of that produced as consistently strong films across the board was Lord of the Rings, and even then I would take Indy over it.

Yeah, it's unfortunate. We waited almost 20 years and that's what they gave us. I tried to rewatch it a little while back and just couldn't do it. Why is Shia LeBouf in it? Why is there so much CGI in a series that is defined by its practical effects? Why did they not realize the ridiculousness of the vine swinging scene?

It was a huge misstep, no doubt.

Indy V needs to be the transition film. Not sure if you looked at the links I posted with the Indy V news, but here's an interesting excerpt:

The forthcoming sequel won’t be the last of the Indy franchise — at least according to Disney chief Bob Iger. The studio head recently discussed Disney’s plans to extend the franchise, and while it’s not entirely clear, it sounds like the studio won’t be pursuing a complete reboot, instead having Ford’s Indiana Jones eventually pass the torch to a younger hero. As Iger described to THR:

"Not like Star Wars, but we hope … right now, we’re focused on a reboot, or a continuum and then a reboot of some sort. Well, we’ll bring him back, then we have to figure out what comes next. That’s what I mean. It’s not really a reboot, it’s a boot — a reboot. I don’t know. We [got] Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in the film. But then what’s the direction? I’ve had discussions about what the direction is, [but] I don’t want to get into it. I don’t think it reaches the scale of the universe of Star Wars, but I see making more. It won’t be just a one-off."

ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) president Lynwen Brennan also made an offhand remark about the Indiana Jones movies, suggesting the series could be a “forever franchise” similar to Star Wars. Here’s what Brennan said, per Collider:

"Kiri [Hart] and her group have mapped out a story and timeline across multiple platforms many years in advance, many exhausting years in advance. … We have a great honor to have responsibility for, so we want to be really careful with that. Not only for Star Wars but with Indiana Jones, which we’re all really excited about as well."

So Indy V needs to be the film that connects the old Indy with the new, and SUCCESSFULLY passes the torch. And by successfully, I mean they need to pick the right guy and do it correctly.

I am very much down for more Indy adventures in the future--we NEED these kinds of adventure films--but you gotta have the right person to step in as his successor as well as the right creative team penning the scripts.
