Politics.

You don't ever want too much heat (this media frenzy certainly created a fair amount), so you downplay it and settle it behind the scenes. The story got too big for all involved, so they decided to quiet it down. Not surprising.

Doesn't mean there wasn't something there, and never was.

It just likely means they've come to an agreement, and all parties involved are doing their part to bury the beef for the sake of cooling things off, attention wise.

Of course, I could be wrong, as I'm not on the inside of this by any means.
