Compression shorts, stick with your normal boxer size or go up one?

I usually wear L boxers (36" waist) but I'm curious as to whether or not I should get compression shorts one size bigger (XL)? I have dat ass and some tree trunk thighs, I don't want them being too tight on me. Not to mention, I have an irrational fear that I was born with big ass balls that are 37% larger than the average human's balls. Don't ask me why, it's just an instinctual feeling based on viewings of pornography.
