Can someone tell me what a cobra choke is?

On the last TUF, Matt has mike in side mount with a reverse half nelson, and Titto is saying "look at that cobra choke!" But it just looks like a common wrestling pin to me.

I looked around on the internet, and it seems to be a catch wrestling move made popular by Sgt. Slaughter, but the pics of that don't look like what Matt was doing.

???

First get a gift wrap. Lockflow.com shows one way to get a gift wrap in steps 1-6 in what they call burping the baby. I've never used or heard of that terminology. You can also get the move from guard and other positions in other ways (that's acutally a poor article). Pull him to his side.

Instead of reaching across his head in step 7, reach to the side of his head on the opposite side shown. Make sure your arm is flush against his neck. Now either make a fist and dig that into his neck, or grip your other arm. It will look sort-of like this. Now "straighten" your arms as simular (but not identical) to doing a collar choke with a gi.

That's the cobra choke AKA cobra clutch AKA million dollar dream AKA gift wrap choke.

I wonder why people don't use this move more, since the "gift wrap" position is pretty common. But usually people go for the armbar or take the back.

What Matt had was actually a neck crank, not a choke. It's the same as the wrestling pin except you crank the neck by pulling the chin down.

the cobra choke i know is basically just pulling their own arm across their throat, then sticking the blade of your forearm against their carotid

The cobra choke is one of my favorites. Sometimes it is hard to get especially in a gi. Sometimes you can't block off one or both arteries well. Sometimes people can resist. In those cases then they go for the armbar or the back.

you guys are actually talking about the cobra clutch, that was sgt slaughters move, the cobra choke is a move used by one of deans black belts, his name is Jocko, and beleive me, it is a choke, although it might seem to look like a neck crank.

I thought the cobra clutch and cobra choke were the same thing. What's the difference in your gym?

the best way for me to describe it would be how tito finished kondo, but the difference would be instead of cranking the neck you aply presure forward with your hips and it becomes a very powerful choke.

The cobra choke you are referring to is when your opponent's right arm is wrapped around his own neck and you are holding it there with your left hand on his wrist. Your right arm is between his right shoulder and his neck? The left side of his neck is being choked by his right arm and the right side by the wrist/ulna of your right arm?

If so, I have never been able to get that to work on anybody but scrubs. Usually I would just take the arm triangle (side choke).
