Hey guys. I recently purchased a pair of Cleto Reyes 16 Oz. Hook & Loop Closure which were way too big for my liking. I felt like the gloves were very wide. I also regretted not going with the lace ups. I was looking into exchanging the 16 Oz. Velcro for either the 12 Oz. or 14 Oz. training lace ups. Would I be able to get away with using the 14 oz. for sparring. Should I just go with the 12 Oz. for pad work and get a 16 oz. pair of Boons for sparring? Thanks in advance for the input guys.

I weigh 160 lbs. I'm six foot and my hands are average size. Do you think the extra padding necessary? Also what do you think of the gloves themselves?

Extra padded gloves are said to have weight distribution problems, be of lower quality, and be unbalanced (top heavy). Most people recommend sticking to the traditional.

Also...I'd crosscheck with your trainer, not us...if 14oz is ok for sparring, particulary 14oz reyes...its his call, not ours. 12 oz for sparring, no way.

Also you're big enough for 16 oz...look to buy zepol in 16 oz or boxeo instead from juan.

Reyes are great gloves, but not extremely padded. At 160 I would say you would do better with the extra padded in 14oz for sparring (assuming your gym allows less than 16oz for sparring). Regular 14oz would offer too little protection for your partners and, unfortunately the 16oz are too roomy for you.
If you want Reyes for bag/pads you might want to go for 10oz or 12oz max with Winning knuckle guards.
BTW, I had a pair of 16oz extra padded and the quality was the same as the regular ones. I just found them to be a little less proportionally distributed in size and weight then the regular 16oz, which is expected since they have more padding. It is a trade off, if you want long and lean you stick with the traditional, but get less protection; if you choose the extra padded they will be a little more front loaded.

You could probably get away with 14oz for sparring. Some coaches will not let you however. I had a 14oz pair of winnings which is probably more protective than 20oz grants. Didnt matter, they were only 14ozs cant use em. Its okay for Paquiao and Mayweather, but Hard hitting not cut 135lbs KShaft will maul you watch out! :icon_lol:

Just get a pair for bag and a pair for sparring. I dont know about boon. The only Thai brand Id consider getting is lace up Fairtex and only certain ones. Eric Morales uses Boxeo for sparring. I have Classics which are a cut from the cloth of Zepol and they are fine for sparring. IMF tech or ring to cage may be good. GS is good too and cheap.

Thanks for the input. I think I will get a pair of 14 Oz. Velcro Boons for sparring (I hear the padding is relatively thick) and a set of Cleto Reyes 12 or 14 Oz. for pad work. Do you guys suggest the 12 or 14 Oz.

As a coach, I very, very rarely let people spar outside of 16 oz. The protection is obviously the single most important aspect of a sparring glove, but lower oz also means an increase in speed. It may be minor, but it can set up an unfair advantage.

I think his problem is the fit with the gloves being too large as he said...not really the weight, which is why I'm confused as to why he still wants Reyes and doesn't want to just try another 16oz brand...because then it becomes a case of seemingly seeking an advantage moreso than the glove width being a problem. Everyone should be sparring on an even playing field...no one is trying to win in a sparring session...using the same size as everyone else is a must, and you may have to look to other brands if Reyes doesn't fit you...instead of looking to drop the weight of the glove.

If you are going to get two pairs. Why not get a pair of tighter 16oz for sparring and a pair of 12oz Reyes for pads?

Yea, that's what I'm going to do. I am going to get a pair of 14 Oz. Lace up Cleto Reyes gloves for pad work and a 16 Oz. velcro pair of Boon for sparring.

For pad work I would suggest 12oz or better yet Safetec fight gloves. Pads are for speed. Reyes always weigh heavy. For instance my Ringside Reyes in 12oz were actually 14.7. I always wondered why I got tired using them instead of my winnings if they were the same weight. That is until I weighed em at staples. Winnings are within .1 ounce I think.

I can understand your concerns as a coach. But me being 135 walking around (when Im in fighting shape, its been 3 or 4 years...) when I put on 16s I dont punch any more Im shoving a weight around. In order to throw a punch I have to telegraph it so much the only guys youre gonna hit are mma dudes. It slows you down so much that you almost have to fight differently. My trainer has guys that have amateur wins over Bradley, Berto, Pavlik, etc... and hes the reason why Berto wasnt in the olympics. He had pissed off whatever body runs the olympic boxing. They were sponsoring Juan, got em tickets to all over but he gaffed it off. When the olympics came around he got uber serious. He wanted to go. So he gets in with Berto at one of the trial fights, hes taggin Berto something fierce. After two rounds My coach realizes they are screwing him because he had little or no points. The olympic body had switched their hopes to Berto. He told Juan to knock him out. Juan was getting there and Berto panicked, grabbed Juan, and HIP THREW him on his head.

Legal battles insued and Im not sure exactly what happened afterwards but Juan really never recovered from that mentally. But these are the sort of guys Im in with. Im not in deep water Im in freakin lake Erie in the Edmund Fitzgerald. The only way for me to touch these guys is to bury my head or shoulder in the chest. I think these guys would be fine with me using 14oz Winning gloves...

Well lol the story was a bit more information than required to make a point/brag about your gym (which is fine). 14 oz winnings is really all you had to say. I'm not too high on the speed advantage concept because 16oz winnings can feel lighter than 14oz Reyes, etc. etc. so I don't see that as a problem if your coach and partners are fine with it. 14 oz Reyes is a different story...and the relevant story to be talking about here.

Yea, I'm still stuck between the 12 Oz. and 14 Oz. Reyes Lace Up Training Gloves. I got a 16 Oz. velcro pair of Boon on the way but I can't decide if a 12 Oz. Cleto Reyes will be counterproductive. I'm sort of leaning toward the 14 Oz. Someone give me their input who has experience here haha. Thanks guys.

People have given you advice. I have a pair of 12oz Reyes that I just weighed at staples and it told me it was a pound. Reyes run heavy, but the pro fight gloves are required to be close to what weight they are advertised as. So a Safetec glove would be perfect if you want Reyes for mitts. Some say for heavy bag the padding is too soft but others who actually use it for that application say it is fine. Ive never been a big fan of Reyes Trainers as bag gloves, but my heavy bag felt like it was filled with concrete powder...

I mean a pair of $70 Title Gels will protect your hand better. Dont expect em to last as long though... After I got Winnings I just laid everything else aside pretty much. Any variance was just for breaking up monotony. The best scenario if you wanna go all out on the heavy bag is to get a pair of Bag gloves and then a pair of bag(double ended not heavy)and mitt gloves. So if youre bent on Reyes that would be expensive. Or you could get title gel bag gloves and whatever pro fight gloves and it will be a little more than the Reyes Gloves, or IMF bag gloves at Ringside and their pro fight gloves or a bag and mitt glove and be about the same as Title.

Kshaft, I'm getting the sense he won't like whatever gloves he decides on since I'm starting to doubt if any adequate research of his own has seriously taken place. Usually when one is asking for opinions on something we've already given numerous opinions on, it can be a sign that it's either not what he wants to hear that is being told or a case of being too indecisive to the point that expectations are too high upon ordering.

Jak my advice is to seriously take time, read through threads already existing by googling "cleto reyes review sherdog", "cleto reyes sherdog", "boon sherdog", basic things like that...which will lead you on a journey of serious research. It took me over 1 full year of research to decide on buying winning gloves...1 full year. I got some flack from some members to the point of feeling like a fraud but it sure as hell feels worth it knowing I went through everything and got what I wanted.

However, I don't suggest taking one year, my example was just to be very extreme to show you taking time is not a bad thing. You don't sound ready yet to buy something and don't sound as if you have really researched beyond the brand/status of Reyes etc. Hopefully you see what I mean here and don't take offense.

Well I was having a feeling that it was going to be "Im doin this anyway" and a little later "Yeah I should have listened..."

Holy fuck people calm down. I'm taking your advice into consideration and I appreciate the input. My only problem is I bought the 16 Oz. Reyes a long time ago as I stated previously and I can only exchange it for another Cleto Reyes glove. However, I bought myself a pair of Boon Velcro 16 Oz. for sparring. I am just trying to decide which Reyes to get (12 or 14 Oz.) and if 12 Oz. on pads would lessen my power for sparring.

12oz for Bag and Pads should be fine at your weigh class.
