Class with sore calves

Took my frist real muay thai class on Wednesday and LOVED it...but I'm feeling the pain 2 days later as my calves are now pretty sore. I've heard that working out sore muscles is actually a good thing, but how sore is too sore? I can feel slight pain when walking downstairs and both muscles are slightly sore to the touch. Should I go to class again today, or wait til next Wed?

Go to class dude. Muay Thai, like any other legitimate combat Sport is all about fighting THROUGH the pain. The conditioning Coach at our gym always says this to fighters he's torturing:

"Any Athlete, if they want to be World Class, EVERY Athlete, has to be willing to not be 100% during training in order to be 100% when it's time to perform."

Soreness is one thing, crippling sharp pains are another. If you can walk without too noticeable of a limp, you can train. Plus, guess what? After a while this magical thing will happen. The pain sill subside, and you'll find you can go longer than you were able to before. That's a little think we like to call getting stronger. It happens sometimes.

well put, pain is good, injury is not, you need to push yourself through pain and something like sore calf muscles wont evolve into an injury
 
done deal thanks for the advice fellas. I was worried about the possibility of injury, but it sounds like I'm ok. hardest part of the workout today is definitely going to be warm ups with the jump rope :icon_chee
 
You'll be surprised, after a minute it won't hurt, until you stop that is.

Don't look down, works for me.
 
see if anyone's got some liniment you can borrow and rub your calves down before class begins. If you just started your calves are going to be in rough shape for a while, make sure to stretch them out properly before and after training. Read up on shin splints (actually 3 seperate issues) and stretching to avoid each. Stress fractures are very common early on due to skipping and kicking with the shin.

I started muay thai training at Fairtex a week ago. i also felt your soreness the following 2 days but after i hit my third day of training that week, i FELT like i could do wayyyy more. My soreness also disappeared over the weekend so come monday i fresh for more training.

Dont miss your classes and i know you will be just fine. i still go to classes even though i didnt have a proper lunch beforehand.
 
made it through class without any serious issues. pretty much spent the entire session learning clinch work, which was awesome...kinda like a game within a game. fighting through the pain is where it's at.
 
Granted that rest is essential to any kind of exercise you will be amazed at how far you can push yourself. Being sore is just a natural part of working out. If you haven't worked out in a long time then take it easy at first. If you are a wuss about pain Muay Thai is not the route you should go.
 
re-working a sore muscle is a good way to get rid of that pain. helps you get fresh blood to the muscles and flush out lactic acid...or something like that
 
Drink LOTS and LOTS of water. Ice your shins down after practice if you need to take some Alleve (Naproxem Sodium) or Advil (Ibuprophen) and get plenty of rest. Most of all keep working it gets better!
 
If you really have to soak them in warm water before you go work out. Once they get warm, they shouldnt hurt enough to stop you, but the might some.
 
Train more regularly and build up the necessary conditioning for whatever you do.
