Movies Christmas Movie Marathon: Violent Night

An excellent Danny Elfman score. Thanks to his work here and in Batman Returns, I find something inherently creepy about Christmas and I love it!

Movie 2: Scrooged

film__11457-scrooged--hi_res-336cb526.jpg

Synopsis: A selfish, cynical television executive is haunted by three spirits bearing lessons on Christmas Eve.

My Rating: 7/10

I vaguely remember watching this as a kid but this was basically a first watch for me, everything felt brand new. I liked this a lot. It was pretty funny, prime Bill Murray was at his best and man can he deliver.

It's old school 80s humor and jokes that made me legit laugh quite a few times. I have seen various adaptations of the Christmas carol story but I think I liked this one the best.

This is only the 2nd film I can recall seeing Karen Allen in (Raiders of the lost ark) she was really good here. And of course Bobcat Goldthwait is always a lot of fun as a co star.

I honestly don't have too much bad to say about this, it made me laugh quite a bit and it's a good feel good Christmas movie you will enjoy.
Karen Allen was the lead in Starman. Also the love interest in Cruising. Had a small role in The Perfect Storm or some other nautical disaster / tidal wave movie. And Malcolm X.

She ought to have had a bigger career but a lot of the competent actresses of that era (Brooke Adams, Linda Haynes etc.) who weren't necessarily Streep or Debra Winger or Sissy Spacek type Oscar contenders kind of just faded away.
She was so damn charming and beautiful in this movie

Yeah I think there was more left on the table for her to do back then. And she still looked pretty good in Indiana Jones 4, possibly my only praise for the film.

There were some other good looking actresses in leading female roles around that time who hit the limit of their acting range with those roles but there was still more movies and more challenging stuff for Karen Allen to do before she would start reading false.

Movie 3: It's A Wonderful Life

its-a-wonderful-life.jpg

Synopsis: An angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed.

My Rating: 7/10

I'll start off by saying this, I remember growing up watching this film but I only remembered 3 scenes, George as a kid saving his brother, getting his ear smacked by his boss, and then the gymnasium scene. I didn't remember anything after that and those 3 scenes are basically the first 25 mins of the movie lol

After that everything was brand new to me. Then it sort of became a boring watch. I'm not the biggest fan of Jimmy Stewart, I can't stand the way he talks. I also really dislike how a lot of characters in the 40s and 50s are all afraid of attractive women.

Attractive woman: kiss me
Lead guy: hey what's the big idea, are you mad? You're crazy
Attractive woman: do you want to come inside?
Lead guy: hey what's the big idea....

It's basically this in a nutshell with the majority of movies I've seen from this era. The woman wants the man and the man tries to play hard to get or they're not interested lol

I was pretty bored watching the middle of the movie. It was dragging to me. It started to feel more like a chore to finish this movie.

However, the last 40 mins of the movie was excellent. And it greatly made up for what I had to endure to get there. The entire concept of what life would be like if you didn't exist is a thought that has come across the minds of a lot of people, including myself.

It was a very strong, emotional, and powerful ending. This is a movie I will watch again before Christmas so I can get a better feel of what I should rate it. It's more so to watch the middle again because there was about an hour of the film that sort of lost me and made me become uninterested in watching it.

The beginning was a 7, the middle was a 5 and the ending was a 10. As of right now I will give this film a 7/10 but that could change after I rewatch it.

Movie 4: Trading Places

Synopsis: A snobbish investor and a wily street con artist find their positions reversed as part of a bet by two callous millionaires.

My Rating: 9/10

All rules are thrown out the window if you can make me laugh hard and this film made me laugh very hard. Sure there are some things wrong with it and some things you have to overlook because it wouldn't happen in real life, but if it can entertain me, I can ignore it.

I believe this was Eddie's 2nd movie and he not only hit it out of the park, the ball is still traveling nearly 40 years later. Comedy like this will never be duplicated again in the soft era of the 2020s.

This is not only one of the best Christmas movies but also one of the best comedies of all time. Strong recommendation to see this movie sometime before Christmas, you will greatly enjoy it. Excellent comedy, a lot of great tits and a fun story that will keep you entertained until the end.

Movie 5: Home Alone

Synopsis: An eight-year-old troublemaker must protect his house from a pair of burglars when he is accidentally left home alone by his family during Christmas vacation.

My rating: 9.5/10

I'm very close to giving it a 10/10 it's probably my favourite Christmas movie no question. It's nearly a perfect movie. My only gripe is his cousin was suppose to be in the attic with him. It was said twice in the movie he was sleeping with his cousin who wets the bed, yet Kevin is the only one who comes down in the morning.

Also some of the traps set up were pretty obvious and could have been avoided, such as stepping on the ornaments thru the window and stepping on the cars by the steps.

I also appreciated more the neighbor friendship he builds after being so scared of him after all those years. I also enjoyed the ending where Kevin sees his new friend called and reconciled with his son.

Joe Pesci was hilarious in this and Daniel Stern played his perfect side kick. Can't forget about the John Candy cameo. Polka polka.

One of my favourite childhood movies, Christmas movies, and an excellent watch every time I watch it.

Movie 6: Gremlins

Synopsis: A young man inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town.

My Rating: 5/10

Gizmo and Phoebe Cates aside, this movie sucks. Unless you grew up watching this as a kid, or have kids yourself, you're not gonna like this movie. I guess you can say this is decent at best, but it's not a film I'd ever watch again, and I own the DVD. It's cheesy and boring.

Pt 2 was completely insane but much more fun as a movie.

I'll give a +1 on The Ref, it's pretty funny.

One I’ll suggest I watch every Thanksgiving/Christmas (it spans both) is Grumpy Old Men. Feel good movie that makes you feel all good inside and is also genuinely hilarious.
I still can't believe Grandpa Gusafson was the fuckin Penguin in the old batman tv show
