I have been searching for a sambo and/or catch wrestling schools in vancouver bc for many years from time to time but I have NEVER seen or heard anyone try to establish it.

Basicly I see new bjj schools pop up in vancouver all the time with some becoming a brand with more than 1 location. Yet I have never seen anyone establish a sambo or a catch wrestling school.

So now I am wondering why is it that no one is interested in the culture of sambo/catch wrestling? I know grappling to its core is no different but I have always admired the culture and the history behind catch and sambo and I would love to train with those who have been involved in the world of sambo and catch wrestling.

With that being said, I have only searched the internet and I understand that some clubs don't have internet or not listed. So I am wondering if anyone knows a sambo/catch school in vancouver bc.

Thanks!

There was a catch wrestling spot in Burnaby awhile back near Willingdon and Hastings.

There was also a Sambo club at UBC but it's been done for awhile. The guy who ran it is still teaching Judo there though.

I blieve the catch wrestling on burnaby is no more and if I recall they use to have it on thursdays only.

Its too bad since at the time it was to far to get there but now its gone.

Its weird how insanely popular bjj is in vancouver and yet sambo/catch wrestling never really took of in vancouver bc.

Truth is, I really like sambo and catch because of their culture and the aggressive approach to grappling which is instilled in both grappling arts.

Apparently Franco's around fraser and 33 does catch wrestling. Not sure what his credentials are but he used to be a training partner of Josh Barnett! So yeah thats pretty cool, but other than them i dont think there are any other places that teach it unfortunately :(

There's very few legit Catch Wrestlers in an ocean of crapplers. The lack of a belt system means anyone with a bit of wrestling and some submission grappling can claim to be a Catch Wrestling instructor. A "meh" double leg and Kimura is enough grappling to impress any random off the street.

Go to a nogi-focused BJJ school and cross-train in Freestyle Wrestling. That's pretty much Catch minus the cranking on subs and legitimacy/lineage issues.

Can you elaborate on the 'minus cranking on subs' part please?

Belt systems don't seem to protect against shoddy instructors in pretty much every other martial art (especially when people can make up their own art and give themselves a 10th Dan Grandmaster rank), and a lack of a belt system doesn't seem to hamper freestyle/folkstyle/greco wrestling.

The problem lies in the lack of a single official organizational body that lays out what a catch wrestler is, what it takes to become a legitimate instructor and where current qualified instructors can be found.

But yeah, a no-gi BJJ school and adding in Freestyle would be the best bet. Certainly be a lot easier to find decent, qualified coaches for each, where ever you go.

I think that's in reference to a joke/stereotype BJJ guys have about catch wrestlers where if a submission isn't working, the solution is always "crank it harder." I think someone drew up a flow chart for it once, as a joke.

I have seen a car in New Westminster that has Erik Paulson CSW advertising all over it. Not sure exaclty where the school is but the instructor had some certification under Erik Paulson CSW system.

I'm not sure exactly what's involved in the affiliation program or what-have-you, so I don't know how good these guys are. It's more of a hybrid grappling system (and I think there's some striking in it, too?), so it won't be "traditional" Catch, but still, could be a good option.
