The other day I was playing FN Champion with my friend and this matchup came up.
Who do you think wins a 15 round fight at MW in their respective primes?

On one hand I think Jone's speed and unorthodox style would be too much for the less-athletic Monzon. On the other hand, I feel as tho Monzon's ice cold demeanor, iron chin, and indomitable spirit would be enough to get him the win.

IMO, Monzon loses the first 4-5 rounds as he gets accustomed to Jone's speed. After that, his accurate jab/straight start to find their mark and he eventually gets the TKO.

What's Sherdog Boxing Forum's thoughts on this? Am I being realistic or am I giving too much weight to Monzon being that he's from a prior generation?

if roys hands were ok he was just unbeatable

yeah, but Roy had a tendency to rely solely on his athletic abilities and thus had some glaring technical problems.

Hell, Montell Griffin was neck and neck with Jones in their first fight, prior to the 9th round of course, and was able to capitalize on some of Jone's fundamental mistakes. Granted, that fight was at LHW, but if Montell Griffin can do that to Jones, why can't a more proficient boxer like Monzon do it?

cuz roy knocked his ass out...twice. roy was a thinker. just because a guy was competitive with him doesnt mean he wasnt in control.

thats just how i see it. roy was simply brilliant when he was firing on all cylinders. if he felt any part of his game could be exploited, he was smart enough to correct it. i know i sound like im slurping him but this is what i believe to be reality

Lol, Monzon would beat Jones and beat him BAD. We are talking about probably the greatest middleweight fighter and champion of all time. Jones wouldnt make it to the 12th round let alone 15th.

Jones Jr. wouldn't step into the ring with Monzon.

toney would beat monzon and bhop would have a chance to as well. and roy whipped both their asses with a fucked up right hand each time.

Jones would get knocked out cold, this time with both his legs up in the air.

Roy and his crystal chin would dance like Judah.

monzon was half the boxer that bhop was, had half the power of ruiz, and didnt even have the speed or athleticism of vinnie freakin paz. explain to me, in vivid detail, how monzon touches roy and his glass jaw at all.

jones would do monzon like he did merqui sosa only he would have to work a little harder

Same way other, lesser fighters did once Roy stopped living off his reputation from beating a green Hopkins, and fat, out of shape ill prepared Toney, then overmatched hand picked fighters who doubled as police officers, garbage men, and bowling alley attendants for 10 years and started fighting live bodies again after guys like Tarver (who Roy wrote to the governing body to not make Roy fight him) hounded him.

Monzon was a smart, composed, strong chinned, sharp fighter always capable of going 15 rounds and always found his opponents chin, even the slicksters. A true world champion who went all over the world facing the best there was, when the sport had much bigger global popularity. Pensacola Roy, who was afraid to travel, afraid to fight Tarver, would crumble if he wasn't chicken enough to duck.

You do know that BHop himself admitted that Monzon would give him a hard fight and that he'd be likely to lose a decision to him?

i myself dont beleive bhop would win that fight which is why i only said he would have a chance. monzon would beat hopkins 8/10 times, but no one would dominate at any point.

God your macho. You should go train with a coach who talks that way and see how long you got the motor skills left to post on here

ok you want to give guys excuses now? how about roy not hitting the heavy bag with the right hand or throwing the right hand in sparring for a month before the toney fight due to injury. and he still easily handled one of the best of the last 25 years and a guy who would tool monzon.

and how exactly can one of the best technical boxers ever and a MW who could beat HWs on skill alone be 'ill prepared'?

The only thing I'll give you in this is that Roy was afraid to travel but who wouldn't be when you get screwed as badly as he was in the Olympics.

Afraid to fight Tarver? Didn't Roy fight the guy that beat Tarver(Harding)?

roy beat harding pretty soundly, after playing a semi pro bball game earlier in the day.

roy was a homebody and distrustful of the outside world. he never signed with a promotional company even though they all hounded him. the bottom line is he didnt have to go anywhere as HE was the p4p king, the biggest draw, and the one with the most to lose and least to gain. saying he was scared of going to england is just another straw haters grasp at to try to bring roy down to size

Tarver wanted Roy before he lost to Harding, Roy didn't like it because of style match up. Roy wrote to the IBF complaining about having to fight Tarver (yet Roy had no problem fighting lesser qualified fighters prior like Ricky Frazier, Richard Hall etc). Roy didn't like southpaws with a little pop and feather fisted Harding was a better fight.

The Olympics thing is a COP OUT. It was revenge for a Korean who got ripped off. To extend that to all other nations is cheap. The top fighters and incumbent champs were European (Benn, Eubanks, Michalchewski) and those were meaningful fights that were passed over for useless crap. Jones was also weasling out of a Felix Trinidad fight before he lost to Hops for christ's sake.

Yet ironically right out of Roy's mouth he said Mayweather should go to England to fight Hatton lol.
