After years of driving shit, I'm finally upgrading a bit. Buying a 2008 CR-V. They are everywhere, but for the price it does what I want.

Since I've never made a purchase like this, I was wondering what anybody may recommend for warranty? It has until April 2013 for the manufacture warranty. They are trying to sell us additional

Damn mobile site gives me problems. Vehicle has 73k km, warranty is 1800 for up to 120k or 2100 bucks for up to 180k. Part of me feels this is worth it, but I also feel like they are trying to screw you.

They're probably trying to screw you, but it's all in the fine print. What does the warranty cover? Power train? Parts? Labour? Normal wear? Etc.

On a side note, sales guys can be clueless about warranty, even if you ask. I asked them a simple question, "I'm buying a standard transmission 4x4, (brand new) and they don't have a manual transfer case any more. If the electronic switch fails and I can't change into or out of 4 hi or low, is that electronic failure covered under the power train warranty?" The guy didn't know and couldn't dig up an answer for me.

Is it a comprehensive (bumper to bumper) or standard (powertrain)? If it's bumper to bumper and a good brand, that's a good price.

Ask yourself this, in 107k km (from now) if you only spend $2100 on repairs, would you be happy?

If its used I would consider it. If you're buying new (which you have stated you are not) I would stick with the standard warranty's that most cars come with.

Personally I would look to buying new if you haven't already done so yet. Most dealer used shit is a ripoff. If you can negotiate patienlty you can rip them off for a new car. Dealerships are always willing to work with you on buying new if you do it the right way.

That said, never make a huge purchase when you need to if it can be avoided (and don't let them know if you are). Always try to purchase when you want to.

If you are only counting oil changes and brake jobs, I don't think it's worth it.

You can get an oil change for 20 bucks and a brake pad change for about 70 bucks from a mechanic on Craigslist.

If you buy the pads from Autozone you get a lifetime warranty and can replace them over and over again. So you'll only have to pay for labor.

I have bought warranties on two cars(both used, about 2 years old, with around 20k miles) . The first one cost about $2000, and more then paid for itself, after the transmission needed to be replaced and a few other things, adding up to around $5000. I also bought one for around $3000 on my current car. I only had one minor issue, for around $200 that was covered. Other then that, I never used it and it recently expired. I'm glad I never had to use, but it also sucks knowing you didn't get your money out of it. So I'm about even on them as a whole.

Depending on the car, coverage, use, and cost it's something I will always consider when buying a car. One saved me ton of money, one went unused. It does give some piece of mind, knowing that you are protected.

If it's a newer car, and you can negotiations a decent price, I would do it, just for the piece of mind.

I'll give another opinion. Don't get a CRV.

I would not buy a warranty on a Honda personally. They last forever

On the other hand I have used my extended (now expired) warranty on my Mazda. I had to literally get into arguments in order to get the dealership to do the work that was covered, but it got done.

cost for the extended warranty for the dealership is $700 to $900 dollars, tell them you will take it for a lower price than the price they are trying to sell it to you for. cost lets say $800, and they sell it to you for $2100 they are making a profit of $1300 on it. You're welcome for the info :)

Thanks for the opinions guys! I think I have decided to not get the warranty. The vehicle is still fairly new, and everybody I have talked to said nothing has gone wrong with their CRV.

tko, how come you advise against the CRV?
