I'm looking to buy sparring gloves and would like comments on wether I should buy gloves with alces or velcro? What are the pros and cons of each?

I'm buying Rival's sparring gloves, the RS1(laces) or RS2(velcro)
Sparring gloves - Rival Boxing Gear Inc.

Thanks!

Velcro gloves are easy to get on by yourself, but generally don't offer the same level of wrist support you get with the lace-up gloves. Lace-up gloves generally offer better wrist support but you need help from someone to lace them up for you in order to receive the benefit. Velcro gloves require much less time and effort to put on and take off. Personally I use both depending on the situation. You may need the convenience of velcro gloves at times, it just depends on your training.

Velcro if ur taking them on and off 100 times a session. If ur sparring properly for a while maybe go laces for wrist support. or you could use wraps with the velcro.

Velcro is sooo much easier, do yourself a favour!

One issue to watch out for with Velcro is that you can scratch your training partners

Laces offer much better wrist support... but I doubt you will be punching full force and hit a very hard surface during sparring. The velcro gloves are much easier to get on and off and where the laces took some time.

I own the RS2 (laces) and even though I have rather big hands I'm able to shove them in there even when they're wrapped and the gloves are laced tight.

Your millage may vary and it is true that laced gloves provide better wrist support.

Compromising safety for convenience is never your best choice. Go lace-ups. Your wrists will thank you (if not now, then when you are 40-50-60+ with arthritic wrists!)

With any well designed glove the abrasive side of the velcro will be on the strap, this will be facing into the wrist when closed so scratching never really occurs, that been my experience anyway. Even doing clinch work...

^+1. This is such a good response, it saved my fingers wear and tear on the keyboard. I reviewed the Rival RS1 Pro Sparring Gloves Long Cuff (Lace Ups) in G&E Reviews with photos. If you do a quick search it should come up. Those have outstanding fit, and wrist support. Check it out when you get a chance, it should be helpful.

How different is it to tie them up with their new cross linings?

If you get velcro gloves that are meant for sparring like Fairtex Super Sparring Gloves you'll see they have a wider velcro enclosure which gives the wearer a much better wrist support than your regular velcro training gloves. Boon also makes velcro gloves with great wrist support.

As far as ease of use, there is no comparison. Velcro gloves are much easier.

It is actually very similar to lacing up gloves with traditional cuff designs that do not have the X-Track lacing system. The nice thing about the X-Track design is that the laces are securely and unobtrusively run or tucked into the channel area between the leather padding, and not only stay secured better, but reduce the possibility of lace burns for your sparring partners. It is a good system.

Unless you have a sparring class where you don't take your gloves off at all during training I'd go velcro
