Hey guys,

I train at a gym that has top-notch BJJ and Muay Thai, and I injured my ribs (cracked rib, or intercostal muscle tear, or whatever-- can't figure out which) so I can't train jiu-jitsu. I took about two weeks off when it first happened, then came back, rolled twice and the second time heard it *pop* and experienced a lot of pain the days after.

I was gonna stick to Muay Thai for the next few weeks (after another week break) because there's no actual impact (unless I spar, which I won't while the rib is injured) and I'll just work the pads and shadowboxing, etc.

Have any of you guys trained with a rib injury, or have any thoughts?

Any advice is much appreciated bros!

i've broken 3 ribs training. its a 2 month break from training and padwork with no sparring for a month when you get back .

But I'm pretty sure mine is NOT broken-- your pain seems a lot more severe, and thankfully, I'm not on that level. Glad you got better and are training again though man.

But I'm pretty sure I just popped the rib from the cartilage, or something that would make that *pop* sound-- a light crack maybe, but not a full-on break yo. The doctor didn't say anything about the cartilage, that's just what the guys at my school think. He said probably a small crack, and 2 weeks to 6 weeks from BJJ.

See a doctor.

Hey man,

I know that's the go-to advice, and you're right. I did, and he said that the pain should be the thing that makes me decide-- so that's why I went back to BJJ (after two weeks) and it popped (which was really upsetting).

That's why I was asking more an anecdotal specific question: has anybody trained with a torn muscle in their ribcage, popped rib, etc.? Or someone that has any advice, in that realm, etc.

Thanks though man.

The same thing happened to me when I used to train BJJ.
A training partner did a bullshit tight basic guard pass and stuffed my ribs.
It was agony lol. Oh, and you will get very (like a knife in the ribs) pains come and go
over time.

Does the injury limit movement?
When I was injured there was no way in hell I could have managed a roundhouse
kick with any force. And as for holding thai pads - no farking way!
One would land and I'd be finished (think of how much impact you feel when
someone throws a roundhouse kick to the body into Thai pads at full force).

i didn't mean 3 ribs at the same time. i have broken 3 separate ribs at different times. it takes 3 months before you heal. you may do light padwork but anything that involves someone punching or kicking your body or someone trying to get side control or mount and resting their bodyweight on you is such a bad idea until that 3 months is over.

Yeah I can do a roundhouse-- but I was worried about holding the pads for sure yeah. I dunno-- I'm still gonna give it another week and we'll see.

These people that tell me three months (see below), MUST be talking about a different injury, cause there's no way I can see myself not feeling better in about 1 to 2 weeks.

Hey man,

I know you didn't mean three ribs at the same time-- I'm saying I don't even think my rib is broken-- the x-ray came back negative and the doctor said it's probably just lightly cracked (though I think it's the cartilage issue...having no M.D.).

So what I was saying is that your broken rib/s (which I assume happened from some high-impact force on your rib/s) is more severe-- like, you probably had TONS of trouble just breathing and stretching and even moving around the first day, yeah?

I experienced a lot of pain one day, like breathing and talking, but then the next day it was back to minimal stitches in my side when I did stuff, like lifted my backpack, etc., it would just feel mad sore. So, I don't think my ribs are as screwed up as yours, was what I was saying. I also don't think I'm even that fucking badass to BREAK a rib and then go back to training in two weeks hahahah (even if I did get injured that trianing, I think I would have just known to not go).

Sorry for the long post, I'm just super upset about all this, and I think we all know how upsetting it is to not train. For anyone else injured right now, I feel you.

oh thats not a broken rib at all. poke your finger into the injured spot when it stops feeling like your being stabbed your fine. other than that think of it as an opportunity to work on your technique.

and yeah my ribs where broken they feel jagged where they healed

see? you a hardcore thug dude hahaha. i'm thankful mine aren't that messed up-- yeah i was just gonna work on my MT technique and conditioning now.

thanks bro!

Also before you start regular sparring you could ease in by using a good body protector.

Ice is your friend,There really isn't much you can do other then stretch and ice. If they are not that bad, you can do sparring, but let your partner know not to do any bodyshots, and dont clinch. I've been training with bruised ribs for about 2 weeks now, i am also a therapist. So if you are on the mindset that you have to train, then ice ice ice... 15-20 minutes on and 30-45 min off. Layt the ice packwith nothing thicker then a shirt between the skin and it. It takes time, but it will eventually heal if you aren't getting hit in them alot. Also epsom salt is good to soak in also.
