News Brent Hinds, founding member of the band Mastodon, dead at 51.

Love Mastodon, RIP, wearing my Once More Round the Sun tshirt today, one of the GOAT album covers

RIP, he was a wild guitar player. One of the craziest "things" or "story" happened to me when I gave Brent a ride from the airport to the venue where Mastodon was playing. They were touring with Clutch. The venue had 2 vans and 2 runners for both Clutch and Mastodon. Brent was not traveling with the band, he was flying in and the band was riding in the bus. I was working production at the venue but was asked to go pick him up from the airport because both vehicles and runners were occupied.

So I drove to the airport in my personal vehicle. It was mid day, dude was lit up. Had to kinda guide him to my vehicle. We got to the pay toll both thing for parking and there was no one in the booth. Brent got out my truck and hoisted the barrier gate up and yelled at me to drive under...I did, I had no idea what to do...it was fucking Brent, face tat and all. He got in my truck and said, "don't let anyone stop you from doing shit". Looked around and passed out. I kept looking in my rearview expecting cops or something but nothing.

When we got to the venue he woke up and said, "this town sucks" and walked to the green room. The next morning I called the airport parking people, to explain what happened and to pay the like $2 I owed. The guy on the phone didn't really understand what I was telling him and eventually just let me pay the $2 over the phone.

Brent walked on the stage a few hours after he left my truck and just lit the place on fire. He was a crazy dude but a real one imo. RIP

This story is exactly how I'd imagine the dude, thanks for telling it.

I would never ride a motorcycle. It's just too risky.

RIP nonetheless.
It's not for everyone but for some it's freeing. I find it to be a great way to quiet my mind. Being in total control of your bike and paying attention plus the noise and wind is consuming. I came so close to death on my bike and the 2 things I most looked forward to most were seeing my dog and eventually riding again. I can't ride far now but I still get in the bike and ease my mind. Music is like that too for some people

When are people going to learn? Don’t ride fucking motorcycles.

People have a hard enough time not hitting me in my 4 door sedan. They’re definitely going to hit you on a motorcycle. It’s just a matter of when.

I can’t even process this right now. One of the most unique, soulful, and inspiring guitarists to ever live is gone. His playing, his voice, his spirit, and everything he poured into Mastodon shaped who I am and gave me strength through some of the darkest times of my life.
I am absolutely beyond myself with grief. It feels like a part of me has been ripped away. I don’t even know how to put into words what Mastodon and Brent’s music has meant to me all these years. Rest in power, Brent. You’ll never be forgotten.
