I don't think trump can argue firing for DEI cuts it. They'll almost certainly get a stay until SCOTUS can take it up. I can't see even a conservative court contorting enough to make this lawful.

It could have been so much easier if Trump simply signed an executive order stating that every federal employee hired from now on will be merit based(test scores, interviews, performance metrics, etc) and race/sex/etc will play no role...

I'm curious how the conservative SCOTUS will decide this issue...

If he did what you suggested then nothing would change. You still gotta meet hiring requirements even as a diversity hire.

That is what he did, and the DEI officers are who he's firing. The memo he sent to agencies gives them 10 days to submit a written plan for closing all DEI related programs and initiatives and firing those employees.
