I know proper knife technique is a lot different from boxing but would holding a knife and using boxing work? jabs/straights etc

Will probably never get in a knife fight since I don't even carry one but still wondering.

I think not getting counter punched is a little more important in knife fighting than boxing. Fencing techniques would be more appropriate.

Penchak Zilat Burat has some good Nife Techniques

Would probably look like spanish destreza fencing. Destreza emphasizes circular motion and uses alot of bodywork that looks like oldschool boxing

yeah. put it in your lead hand and use it like a jab.

then double it up

Guess it is the same with boxing when you want jab a person, it is still the same.

you could quite potentially varry your boxing to work with a knife

when we are using weapons we tend to try and keep our empty hand strikes and weapon strikes similar

look at how eskrima manages to do the same thing with epty hand, knife, stick, machete

I imagine you could simulate it by just sparring with jabs only and holding a red marker pen but knife fighters in most systems will often hold the knife with their rear hand for retention purposes, if just using the one knife obviously. So maybe in that case you'd be wanting to practice hitting with the cross.

I guess that is one of the major differences between short knife fighting and fencing. In fencing your other hand doesn't really come into play at all. In a knife fight you can use it to grab, push and strike even.

i think the best bet would be to just run up to the unarmed person and stab them in the throat lol

offensively

i wouldnt try to just cover up and block with my arms if the other guy had a knife too though lol

would be scary as hell.

If anyone is familiar with Ray Floro, you'll see that his style of knife fighting is very similar to boxing.

My own theory is that you want your fighting with a weapon to be as instinctive as your fighting without a weapon. So as someone who trains boxing I would want my fighting with a knife to be as similar to how I fight without a knife as possible, that way I don't have to consiously think about what I'm doing.

Gets one of those things that look like a shit to put on your hand and punch people that I do not know the name but with a spear point on it instead of nothing.

Then you just need to use your boxing.

I teach Knifeboxing for two reasons.

My background includes MMA and FMA (Filipino Martial Arts)
When I see the Dog brothers do full contact stick fighting, it looks like MMA + Eskrima sticks. So the usage of combat sports for weapons fighting seems valid to me.

The other reason is that I use the same logic as the US Marines Bayonet Fighting. The Bayonet Fighting is based from Boxing. Not because Boxing is any better than other styles, but because that is what many of the soldiers were familiar with. So instead of learning a completely new style, it's efficient learning and more comfortable for the soldiers to learn a new weapon based off of something they are familiar with.

Even if you believe that let's say fencing would be better for knife combat, it's not a bad idea to practice Knifeboxing if you are into MMA, and when SHTF, if for some reason your knife fencing isn't working too well, you can revert back to Knifeboxing as your back up plan.

As a student of knife combatives for a long time, I must say this:

There is NO such thing as knife-fighting. Because in a TRUE knife fight, the loser is the dead one and the winner is one that dies minutes or hours later.

There is knife combat, knife defense, and defense against a knife-attacker, but no such thing as knife fighting. Most violent incidents involving knives that I observe are either outright killings or attempted killings, OR someone using a knife as a defense against another assailant who is armed or unarmed.

Apart from sanctioned ring events, knife fighting is simply too dangerous in the real world. Even a person who has no experience with knife techniques can seriously ruin somebody's day, permanently.

A stab/slash is just like a slap/punch. During a regular fistfight, even if you don't really win or put a hurt on your opponent, how many punches do you normally land on the opponent, at contact range?

A LOT. Even if he has you in a bear hug and your punches don't carry much energy as usual, but still your fists make a lot of contact with soft parts of his body.

Now envision this same fist but clutching a razor sharp metal instrument. Suddenly, what only appears to be weak punches becomes one fatal blow after another as steel pierces flesh with ease.

When a knife has been pulled, no matter how incompetent your attacker is, your gonna get bloody.

Hmm, this is interesting being as I've met veterans of knife....er uh...combats? Who won, aren't dead, and have scars to prove it.

OP needs to read "Put 'Em Down, Take Em' Out" by Don Pentecost, which, as far as I'm concerned, is the bible of knife fighting instructional.

I can't tell you exactly where you can find free PDFs on the internet, but you can, and a hard copy of this out-of-print book will run you something like $200.
