About to make my first purchase of boxing sparring gear. I was going to go all black...headgear, cup protector, gloves. But I though having red gloves with everything else being black might look cool. Generally is it better to have uniform colors for everything? Or do you think the red gloves with everything else black would look cool?

Yes, having matching colours gives you a +5 in defence, though having all different colours gives you a +6 distraction bonus, lowering your opponent's ability to react. Pink gear gives you +10 in manliness through what's known as the Gene LeBell effect.

Seriously though, unless you're being photographed or video recorded as part of some big promotional event (HBO's 24/7, UFC Primetime or something along those lines), I don't think colour should matter as long as the gear does the job. Don't bypass certain brands because they don't fit the colour scheme you're going for. The best boxing glove in your budget might not come in the same colours as the best headgear or no-foul protector. One might be olive green with black, while the next may be blue, while the third may be red. Look around, find the best deals you can and go from there.

The first question you should ask yourself is what your budget is. Remember, you will eventually need:

1 pair sparring gloves **
1 pair bag gloves
1 mouthguard **
1 headgear **
1 groin protector **
2-3 pairs of hand wraps

** = only needed once you start sparring

If you're doing straight boxing, you'll also need boxing shoes, if doing kickboxing, you'll need shin guards.

If you're just starting, you likely won't be sparring right away, so you can start with bag gloves and hand wraps. Get the rest as you need.

it really depends on what your boyfriend prefers

Haha! I knew i was asking for it when i posted this. I honestly normally don't put too much thought into these things. But because i am new sparring i wasn't sure if there was a certain decorum. Thanks for the feedback bubkusjones.

I go 100% on people who don't match. Facking eyesores..

I would do a yellow no-foul protector, and whenever you catch them looking down, pop them in the chin.

I wouldn't know.But then again,I'm not 12,so...

Honestly, most people who are starting out and have money (or pros who have worked for it) go out and buy all matching gear; fighters who are starting out and don't have a lot of money will buy what ever they can when they can and end up looking like rainbows, however, they normally turn out to be better fighters. Moral of the story, boxing is not a fasion contest, it is a fine art of learning to hit someone without getting hit, or at least less than they hit you.

Funny you mention this. Johnny Tapia used to do a hip thrust feint for the same effect. I thought it was the slickest thing ever, not too many people picked up on it though. Watch at :57 and 3:18

I am old school, I catch every dirty trick. :P

Nice. Tapia was a beast in his prime.

To the TS, I always wanted an all black sparring set-up. I would get everything laces though. That way if you wanted to switch things up a bit, you can always change the lace colors as a nice accent to the black.

This is true. If you still look sports-model good after training, then you haven't really been training at all :icon_lol: There is a larger amount of people who come in with nothing but handwraps who will stay for at least a couple of more months. Meanwhile, those who come in decked out with hayabusa/venum/tapout from head to toe seem to mysteriously disappear after the first week (which is a shame, considering I would have bought the gear off them :icon_sad:)

To OP- it doesn't matter. Choose something that is darker coloured if your gym is dirty (like mine). Also, remember mouthguard and to get said gloves in 14oz or larger.
