Really don't know what's tony doing in the first gif. He literally moved his arm to get locked into the head and arm choke

Can someone with grappling experience explain what Tony tried to do? Legit question

He was trying to control Bobby's posture by grabbing his leg, and my guess would be maybe trying to set up a guillotine down the road. There may not have been much thought put into it at all other than it was late in the round and he didn't want to get ground n pounded. If he left his arm where it was (on Bobby's left, instead of moving it to the inside on the right side of his head) that arm was pretty well isolated for other attacks, so it was kind of a pick your poison thing. I'm not flexible enough to try that Eddie Bravo type stuff, but Tony's probably more comfortable with that style of BJJ.

edit: and as far as I know, he didn't need to put his arm on that side of the head to try to control the posture. It's not something I've seen a ton of people do from half guard, either.

First gif is Tony in a nutshell - all flash and no regard for fundamentals. Instead of defending the takedown, he stands straight up (like Till in the Du Plessis fight) and then goes for an Imanari roll (correct me if I'm wrong). When he was young and quick, his unorthodox striking and flow-y grappling made for must-see TV - however, as he slowed down and his reliance on blocking strikes with his chin proved to run its course, it became clear that his style was not going to age well.

Sucks. And the level of talent he's losing to is diminishing. He's good enough to be in there, but not good enough to beat anyone that's UFC caliber, it seems.
