Anyone have any experience using Ritalin and/or Adderall while training BJJ and/or Judo (or any other combat sport really)? Just wondering how it affects training, if at all.

I rolled on adderrall once...years ago. Couldnt relax at all, gripping at 300%...I wouldnt do it again.

Depends on what you are taking the drugs for. Whether its medication prescribed by a doctor or you are using it for recreational use.

Working on a thesis paper, are we?

I bet it would be a performance enhancer in grappling. I could be wrong, though.

i am not trying to be funny, but it will ruin your sex life. it is like the opposite of viagra and will give you a pool like shrinkage effect. plus you will be up all night. but you can drink like a fucking champ.

It is quite good to roll on ritalin. definitely a performance enhancer.
I compete on modafinil and training on mod i am much crisper and energized than when i am not on.
but yeah drugs are bad and your dick will rot off and the pros dont do it so dont try it.

I roll on ritalin almost every time. I get it from my doc for my ADHD, and if I don't take it before class I often get that 'head in the clouds' feeling where my mind starts wondering and I'm overly distracted by things going on around me (especially people coaching!). No side effects, but you should definitely eat a little food from the time you take the pill to the time you roll or else your stomach will feel extremely weak. All in all it's a wonder drug

I was talking to my doc about modafinil. I don't know if I want to do it yet. I work odd shifts and sometimes have to switch time zones for work. I was wondering if it would help me in training as well. I'm tired of relying on monster and red bull to keep me going.

Doesn't modafinil have some potentially pretty serious side effects?

And stimulants combined with exercise can cause problems. Heart rate and blood pressure and such.

Amphetamine salts have shown to be a performance enhancer at a dosage of something like 7.5 mgs per 70 lbs of bodyweight. Anything significantly higher can actually be detrimental.

Also long term being on these legal stimulant drugs will just make you shittier in general.

Dogstarman, dont take my word for it, but as you are asking for my opinion, here it is.
Modafinil is easily one of the safest drugs I have ever taken. First week you take it you get a real rush on it. Most reviews of it are based on that first week of awesomeness. you might get a headache or so after the first 1 or 2 of taking it.
After that? It just makes you feel 100% awake and ready to do anything for the entire day on just half a pill (100mg)
I work 12 hour days in high stress environment I go to the gym and BJJ. I BJJ every day and gym 3x a week and mod allows me to do this without feeling tired... ever. Its like coffee without the jitters or ritalin with out the manic feel. It has a side effect list like all drugs do, but I have not noticed a single one of them other than a headache the first 2 days or so. That's it. Safer than coffee and it has a very low tolerance build up and you dont get addicted to it like you do with ADD meds. changed my life for the better, seems like you need it for a more legit purpose though.

i have a vyvanse 70mg prescription. the idea is to maintain around 5mg bioavailability throughout the day.

i need to drink a substantial amount of water and really watch my weight. an amphetamine regimen means diligence with regards to RHR, MHR, and tolerance.

i don't take them every day, just like i don't take my klonopin every day. on days i've taken them during training, i felt like a god damned cheater, because i was. not even in grappling so much, but especially in standup the reaction time increase is just NOT fair.

not to mention the overall increase in perception of stimuli. you see more of the 'big' picture, which gives me more/enough time to analyze the situation. i turn into anderson silva. swear to god. you see the punches coming almost at the moment your opponent decides to extend them.

when the new OLY cycle resets for USAJudo i'm gonna knock down the dosage and be sure to flag the tournaments i'll get dropped at, so i can stop use well beforehand.

i have a demonstrated medical need. that being said, a TUE for vyvanse would be worse than one for roids. at least you have to earn the superpowers the roids give you...

Do NOT take ritalin or other similar drugs...especially when exercising but really you should not take them EVER.

Unfortunately the short and long term effects of these drugs can cause damage that may end up killing you. These drugs are prescribed without proper testing and monitoring and you are taking a big chance by taking them. Have you had an ekg + echo test? A stress test? These should be given before taking these drugs to see how your body will respond to these drugs. Then you should have an echo every 6-12 months while on the drugs to see if your heart is changing at all from the drug. The long term effects of these drugs, from their damage to the heart, could kill you in 10 years from now. I have seen it happen. I have seen guys taking ritalin for 10+ years drop dead from a heat attack in their late 20s/early 30s. And there are no safe alternatives. Do not trust that little label that tells you about the side effects. If you see words that point you to the fact that this drug is a stimulant (ie can cause increase in blood pressure, might keep you from falling asleep, etc.) please do not take it.

this statement is equal parts erroneous and hysterical, and has no basis in medical, pharmacological, or scientific fact.

ftfy.

your anecdotal evidence is neither medically informed or empirically proven. you are using misinformation and scare tactics to convince individuals to take your side. you grossly overstate the risks, not only in a worst-case-scenario manner, but vaguely so.

you should stop offering your medical opinion unless your name ends in M.D., D.O., or PhD.

My name does actually end in Ph.D., a degree I received from an R1 school. But why would you assume it does not? In addition I have worked with some of the top cardiologists in the world, which is where I get my opinion of ritalin. Again, most doctors (well pretty much every single family practice MD that precribes this drug) do not do proper testing when prescribing these drugs and they can lead to sudden death. Does it happen a lot? NO. But if you are the 1 person that has an undiagnosed heart defect, takes these, and works out, it might be a huge mistake. I have seen death from this drug, ritalin, specifically. No one should be encouraging anyone to use this drug without thorough testing and especially when working out. And I can bet that every person on this board that has taken it, even with a drs rx, has not had proper testing because its too expensive and family practice mds do not even have it in their office.

A friend gave me half a pill of ritalin. Don't know what strength. It made me really jumpy and gave me really bad cottonmouth. Will not do it again.
